The Sandwich Market, Elizabeth City, NC

February 15, 2019

Tammy and I took a little ride to check out The Sandwich Market in Elizabeth City, NC the other day. Thanks to Ms. Bonnie for recommending them to us. Now I know some of you are thinking that’s a strange name for a bbq joint. Well you’re probably right. The Sandwich Market does not specialize in BBQ or Brisket. In fact you have to go on a Sunday to get their Q. Yep, they only serve bbq, brisket and smoked chicken on one day. You see, like so many other places starting out, the owner still has his day job. Therefore Saturday is the only day he can devote the time to the smoked meats. So needless to say, we headed down on a Sunday afternoon. Here’s what we found out about them.

The Restaurant and Staff:

The Sandwich Market has a really nice restaurant. They have a good sized dining room that can handle quite a crowd. I believe there may have been a few picnic tables outside too. Their dining room is clean and has a very friendly feel to it. It’s decorated with old kitchen gadgets and garden tools. Very homey. All of the employees were especially friendly and very helpful. They stayed up with cleaning the tables as guests left. It was an outstanding job by everyone.

You place your order at a counter when you enter The Sandwich Market. There was a pretty good crowd in front of us so we had time to talk to another couple in line. The other customers were also friendly here. While talking to this couple we were told how good everything is here. Homemade sides, desserts, and sandwiches too. We told them we were here for the bbq and brisket and asked how it was. Oh yeah it’s really good too. So while you’re in line you can check out the daily specials written on the board. Well they moved us through pretty quickly and it was time for us to make up our minds. Here’s how it went.

Our Choices at The Sandwich Market:

The Sandwich Market

Brisket Plate with Mac & Cheese and Apple Sauce.

Tammy ordered the Sliced Brisket Plate with Mac & Cheese and Applesauce. Remember the sides are homemade. The mac & cheese was wonderful. It was creamy and had plenty of cheese. Her applesauce was fantastic. They make it chunky and blend in some outstanding spices. The brisket had a great flavor. It didn’t have a heavy smoke flavor. They did use some good seasoning with the light smoke which worked very well with the brisket flavor. The homemade red sauce served on the side with the brisket was delicious. You didn’t need it but it went so well with the brisket.

I chose the Pulled Pork Plate with Baked Beans and Potato Salad. Again. Homemade. The baked beans were great. They’re cooked up in a wonderful sauce. The potato salad was fantastic. The Sandwich Market uses red skin potatoes with a mayo base. I loved it. And finally the pork. Like the brisket, the pork had just enough

smoke and was seasoned just right. They do use a little vinegar sauce making it all just right. They also bring out some homemade vinegar sauce on the side. I did test it out and it is very good, just not needed.

The last added touch was a square of homemade cornbread. Yes, it was excellent as well. I guess you can tell that we were happy with this stop on the trail.

Final Thoughts:

So there you have it. We really enjoyed this stop along the trail. Thanks again to Ms. Bonnie for the recommendation. We were told by some of the other folks dining there that the rest of the menu is just as awesome. Like I said at the beginning, the owner still works his full time job. Some of my followers can tell you how scary it is and how hard it can be to step out there on your own. I’d like to go back again to try out something else on the menu. I have been saying for a long time that Elizabeth City needs a bbq joint. Well it may only be one day a week but it’s a start. I’d say give them a try and see what you think. Just don’t go in looking for that power house of smoke in their meats. The light smoke and seasonings work really well on the pork and brisket. Thanks to everyone at The Sandwich Market for a very good stop on the BBQ Trail.

Elizabeth City does have a barbecue restaurant called Barbecue Barn located on Weeksville Rd. Their barbecue is awesome! Didn’t know The Sandwich Market was open on Sundays.

I did a check and the Barbecue Barn is open. We had checked on them a few years ago and it seems they were out of business. Good to hear they are there. We’ll have to check them out. Thanks for the info.
