Pigman’s Barbeque, Kill Devil Hills, NC

Pigman's Barbeque

It’s time to visit Pigman’s Barbeque in Kill Devil Hills, NC. Tammy and I had been putting this visit off for a long time. You see, and I did tell the owners this, the last time we were there it was pretty bad. That was before starting Patrick’s BBQ Trail. So after starting the blog I simply chose not to go there. Well they’re located on the Bypass at Mile Marker 9-1/2 and every time we go past there I’d always say sooner or later we have to go back. And the time finally arrived for us to try them out again. Just one more note, when I talked to the owners I found out that someone else owned Pigman’s Barbeque when we stopped going there.

The Restaurant and Staff:

Pigman’s Barbeque has a nice size dining room. They have a casual décor. Come as you are, they are after all at the beach. You come in and place your order at the counter then pick a seat. Everyone was pretty friendly. We picked a time when it was off hours not to mention it was off season at the beach. Therefore it was not crowded at all. When we first found Pigman’s Barbeque we would sometimes take the hour and a half ride there just to eat and then head back home. We loved them. Then came the period when we had to stop going because they had really gone downhill. Well now we have the latest pair of owners so let’s see how it went.

Tammy’s Choices at Pigman’s Barbeque:

Pigman's Barbeque

Beef Plate with Green Beans and Sweet Potato Fries. Side of Brunswick Stew

Tammy ordered the Beef Plate with Green Beans and Sweet Potato Fries. It also comes with hushpuppies. Looking at the picture of her food you’ll also see the Brunswick Stew that I ordered. Let’s go ahead and start with the green beans. They had plenty of seasoning in them and rounded off her meal very well. The beans were a pretty good side. The sweet potato fries, well I didn’t try them. I’m just not into them. Tammy said they were really good. The hushpuppies were wonderful. And the beef you may ask. The beef was pulled. I thought it was really good. It had a nice smoke flavor and was moist and tender. Tammy liked it even though she prefers sliced brisket.

I also ordered a Half Rack of Ribs for us to share, even though I ate most of them. The ribs were wonderful. They did have some sauce on them but not over sauced. You could still get the rib and smoke flavors too. And they had just a slight tug to them when biting into one. Meaning? Pigman’s Barbeque nailed it. These ribs were perfectly cooked and great tasting. I will go back for more of them.

And My Other Choices:

Pigman's Barbeque

Pulled Pork with Baked Beans and Fried Okra. And a side of Ribs.

Well other than what was already mentioned, I ordered the Pulled Pork with Baked Beans and Fried Okra. The okra was wonderful. Fried just right. I wonder if they would sprinkle some dry rub on them I asked. May have to ask next time. And the beans were delicious as well. I really enjoyed the sauce they were cooked in. Also before I forget, the Brunswick stew was outstanding. It was packed full of veggies, potatoes and meat. Making it another really good side dish.

I believe that brings me to the pulled pork. The pork was excellent. It had a great smoke flavor and just a hint of vinegar sauce in there. Eastern NC Pulled Pork the way it should be. I love it when you get the smoke flavor along with a little vinegar kick. It just brings it all together. Nice job guys.

Final Thoughts:

Pigman’s Barbeque. Milepost 9 1/2.
Kill Devil Hills, NC.

Well considering Tammy and I were both hesitating and resisting going back to Pigman’s Barbeque I am so glad we did. Things seem to have turned back around for the better. That’s so good to see, and taste. I was able to meet and talk to Top and Richard, co-owners, for a few minutes. Both were very nice and seemed to really enjoy what they were doing with the restaurant. I love the location on the by-pass and the area. I have loved going to the Outer Banks ever since I was a young fella. And we will not date that in years. Throw in some outstanding bbq and I’m a happy guy. Let’s just say that we may hop in the Jeep just to ride down there again.
