Boss Hog's Backyard BBQ

Let me tell you about Boss Hog’s Backyard BBQ in Williamston, NC. Have you ever been riding down the road, minding your own business, and out of nowhere pops up a bbq restaurant? One that you just can’t pass up? After all, you never know when you might be there again, right? Well it happens to us frequently and this was one of those times.

Tammy and I had actually made a road trip earlier this day to check out another place. We were just meandering our way back home and there they were. I pulled in the parking lot and Tammy looked at me like I had lost my mind. Well maybe I had but I knew I had to check this place out. So here we go.

The Restaurant and Staff:

Boss Hog’s Backyard BBQ is located right on Highway 17 in Williamston, NC. It’s a great location and to me it just seemed like the building and all were pretty new. They have a mid-sized dining room which they were keeping very clean. They serve cafeteria style. You come in and walk up to the counter to place your order. First were the meats then you slide down and pick your sides. Everything was looking great and we were feeling very welcomed so I just knew I had made a good choice. Let’s go on.

Our Choices at Boss Hog’s Backyard BBQ:

Tammy chose the Fried Chicken and BBQ Plate. She went for Apples and Mac & Cheese. The cooked apples were very good. Tasted like a homemade recipe and made a great side for Tammy’s dinner. The mac & cheese was excellent. Plenty of cheese and a little crispy along one of the edges. It was definitely a “do again”. I didn’t try the fried chicken, I just had too much food of my own to try. Tammy loved it though.

I went with the Ribs and BBQ Plate with Baked Beans and Brunswick Stew. The beans were wonderful. They had a nice thick sauce with maybe a little molasses cooked in with it. I’m not sure but it all blended together really well. The Brunswick Stew was fantastic. I love a good Brunswick Stew and this was right up there. I loved it. It had plenty of meat, veggies and potatoes in a great, thick broth. You can’t go wrong with this stew.

Well the pork at Boss Hog’s Backyard BBQ is good ole fashioned NC Chopped BBQ. You could see traces of the smoke ring along with bark mixed in. No sauce added, just smoked Q. This is some fantastic bbq.

The ribs were quite tasty as well. They tasted like there may have been some brown sugar in the rub to give just a hint of sweet. They normally serve the ribs with a sauce on them. I had mine without sauce. Knowing that I’d be bringing some home so I passed on it. I think the ribs were really good without sauce. Wonder how they are with it. They even warm the sauce for them. Maybe someone will fill us in.

Sauces:

I did try the sauce that was at the table on a little of my pork just to taste it. It was a basic Eastern NC Vinegar Sauce. Had a little twang and went really well on the pork.

Final Thoughts:

Now I’m thinking that I should have found Boss Hog’s Backyard BBQ before now. I’m not sure how long this one has been open but there is a second location in Washington, NC also. I even checked the list of restaurants I’ve made and they weren’t on it. And that’s all the more reason I’m glad we stumbled across them today. Fortunately for us since we weren’t very hungry during our visit we were able to enjoy it again on Sunday afternoon for lunch. Yep, that’s why we always travel with a cooler. This turned into an excellent stop for Patrick’s BBQ Trail. I look forward to stopping by again someday.

I was headed to Nags Head from Raleigh with the wife (Linda) and the dog (Goldendoodle named Beau) yesterday (Friday August 24) and ended up leaving Raleigh with the 5:00 rush hour. By the time the Raleigh traffic thinned out I was getting hungry and had Linda searching for a place to have dinner somewhere around Williamston or Plymouth. She found your review of Boss Hogs BBQ and we found it so appealing we decided to stop there. We both had the BBQ plate with slaw and fried okra and found the whole meal to be excellent. The Q was moist and Smokey with some tasty outside pieces mixed in. The slaw was good and the fried okra was perfect. They cooked the fried okra while we were moving through the line so it was hot when we got it. The hush puppies were excellent too.

Thanks for directing us to Boss Hogs and we will be reading your other reviews.

Joel. That makes my day. We are always happy when someone finds one of our reviews and gives the place a try. Especially when you enjoy it too. Thanks for the comments. By the way, we’ve been hitting up the Raleigh and Durham area lately. Watch for more to come. Thanks again.

Stopped by on way to Elizabeth City from Lumberton, NC. Sure glad I did it was so good. I got ribs, grilled chicken, collard greens and homemade macaroni and cheese, all was good. Got cup of sauce too, it was really good too. Probably will stop back by on way home.

Amy. That’s great to hear. We truly found this one by accident. Glad we did. Glad you enjoyed your visit.

It sounds great. Do you know if they cook exclusively with wood? My nephew says that the chicken pastry is great, too.

John, I don’t know about the wood exclusively. Everything I had seemed to be smoked really well. As long as they give me a good smoke ring and some good smoke flavor I’m happy.

I heard the chicken is really good but don’t know for sure. About the only time I get chicken at a restaurant is when it comes on a combo platter. If you get there and check it out let us know what you think. Thanks.
