Tickle My Ribs BBQ

Today we’re going to check out Tickle My Ribs BBQ in Burlington, NC. We hit the road early so that we’d be able to catch two different restaurants in one day. So we landed in Burlington around 12:30 to get started with lunch. Tickle My Ribs BBQ has a nice location just off I-85 on University Dr. They have a corner spot in a row of businesses.

The Restaurant and Staff:

Tickle My Ribs BBQ has a two part dining room plus outside seating. So they have plenty of seating. When we went in we were greeted by a young man and a young lady. They were working the counter and the front together. Both were very friendly and kept a good eye on the dining room along with the customers. They made sure everything was going good with everyone in the place. After placing your order at the counter they bring the food to the table you choose. They also came back 2 – 3 times to check on us.

The restaurant was also very clean. It was nicely decorated with pictures, pig and bbq related stuff. We were very relaxed while eating our lunch there. It appears that everyone working took pride in the work they were doing and the service they provided. Nice job everyone!

Our Choices at Tickle My Ribs BBQ:

Tickle My Ribs BBQ

Three Meat Plate with Sliced Brisket, Pulled Pork, and Ribs.

Today I went with a Three Meat Plate with Chopped Pork, Sliced Brisket and Ribs. You have to ask for the sauce on the side or everything will be sauced with their house sauce when you get it. My sides were Brunswick Stew and BBQ Beans.

So starting with the bbq beans I’ll say they were really good. They have meat cooked in and I tasted just a hint of chili powder in them though they were not hot. To me it was a very good mix. My Brunswick Stew was really good too. It came with plenty of meat and veggies cooked into a good broth. Definitely a get again item. Each plate comes with hushpuppies too. These were also very good.

Now come the meats. Let me just start out with the ribs. They were good but just not my favorite. I felt like they needed more smoke flavor and char them on the outside a little. If you like to put sauce on your ribs more smoke and the char may not make as much difference to you. Like I said they were good. The brisket had a good flavor. It had smoke flavor but very little smoke ring. I’m not sure how they do that but the

flavor was there. The pork was like that too. It has the smoke flavor but not much of a smoke ring or bark on it. But like I said they do get the flavor in there somehow so both the brisket and the pork were really good choices.

Tammy ordered a Two Meat Plate with Sliced Brisket and Chopped Pork. Her sides were Fried Okra and Mac & Cheese. We’ll just move into the sides. The fried okra was very good. It had a nice coating and fried up very nice. The mac & cheese was also very good. Nice and thick with plenty of cheese.

Sauces:

I tried the Eastern NC Sauce, the House Sauce and the Western NC Sauce. The Eastern NC was pretty good. The Western NC is mainly a sweet tomato based sauce. And the House Sauce, also tomato based, was good too. Tickle My Ribs also offers a South Carolina Mustard Sauce. I’m not thrilled with mustard sauces but Tammy, who loves them, tried it and really liked it.

Desserts:

We also checked out some desserts at Tickle My Ribs BBQ. Tammy ordered what they call a Mud Cup. It’s just a small cup with chocolate pudding. They add crumbled Oreo Cookies on the pudding then top it off with a Gummy Pig. This is a dark chocolate lover’s delight. Tammy said that it was just the right size after a good meal. And the pig topper, she loved it. You have to give them credit for originality. We have eaten at many bbq restaurants and I don’t recall ever seeing a large pink gummy pig topping off anything. I tried the banana pudding with whipped cream on top. That was probably the weakest part of my meal. It was ok but not wonderful. I wished I had tried the Peach Cobbler but didn’t. Maybe next time.

Final Thoughts:

Tickle My Ribs BBQ was a nice stop on the BBQ Trail. They have good food and very nice people. I would go back. I think you’d enjoy a visit. Only thing I’d do different would be to just go with the pork and brisket next time. Don’t misinterpret anything I said here to be negative towards them. The food, service, and dining experience were all good.
