Pok-E-Joe's BBQ

Today we’re making the trip to Lynchburg, VA so we can check out Pok-E-Joe’s BBQ. They’re located on Boonsboro Road not far off of Highway 501. A little GPS from Hwy. 460 and you’re there. We actually came down from the Blue Ridge Parkway to find this one. So let’s check it out.

The Restaurant and Staff:

Pok-E-Joe’s BBQ has a nice little restaurant in a shopping center. They have 7 or 8 tables plus some counter seating. They also have some outside seating if you like. It was very cozy and friendly. Our waitress, Tammy, was great. She treated everyone like they were one of her friends. No strangers there to her. Several of the customers that came in she did know and called them by name. We joked about it being like the TV show “Cheers”. Maybe not that extreme but you get the idea. Very friendly.

I also need to mention that they are under new ownership. At the time of our visit the new owner had been there for one month. So even though they kept the name, the owner has changed.

Now for the food.

Our Choices at Pok-E-Joe’s BBQ:

Sliced Brisket and Smoked Turkey Breast at Pok-E-Joe’s BBQ.

Tammy ordered a Two Meat Plate with Creamed Corn and Mac & Cheese. She went with Sliced Brisket and Smoked Turkey Breast for her meats. Tammy and our waitress, Tammy, both love the corn. I didn’t try it. The mac & cheese was great. It was homemade and had a wonderful taste. The smoked turkey was very good. It had a good smoke flavor as well as being moist and tender. Even I liked it. The sliced brisket was awesome. Great smoke flavor, nice smoke ring and good bark. It also was moist and tender. The brisket is also available chopped but we didn’t try it.

I chose a One Meat Plate with Pulled Pork. Fresh Cut Fries and Ranch Style Pintos were my sides. I think this may have been my first time ever ordering just one meat by choice. I usually get some type of combo. So my fresh cut fries were wonderful. Fried up perfectly, I loved them. The Pintos were good but not my favorite. I’d probably go with the baked beans instead. That’s just a personal preference. The pork was exceptional. It

had a great smoke flavor. If you look at the picture you can see the awesome smoke ring. This pork is worth the trip from Suffolk to get it again. I loved it. No sauce, just great pulled pork.

Dessert:

We ordered three cookies to go. I’m not sure if they are homemade but I do know they were wonderful. We tried the Chocolate Chocolate Chip, Smores, and Macadamia Chocolate Cookies. They’re all outstanding. Save some room. We actually tried these while on the road back home.

Final Thoughts:

So we stopped at Pok-E-Joe’s BBQ on our way home from Harrisonburg. Yes, we took the long way. But after a disappointment up there this turned into a remarkable stop for us. I actually was not in favor of stopping for bbq but Tammy convinced me to go for it. So glad she did and we did. This turned out to be a true blessing on our trip. Our waitress, Tammy, was awesome. The young man preparing the meals was very polite and friendly. The food was great. Even the other customers were friendly. We didn’t get to meet the new owner, maybe next time. It does appear that Pok-E-Joe’s BBQ will continue to serve great food and good service even under new management. That’s great to see. This was definitely worth going to and I’m glad to add them to Patrick’s BBQ Trail.
