Something Different

When we started our adventure today we didn’t know we’d end up at Something Different in Urbanna, VA. We spent the day antiquing and didn’t really have a plan for where we’d eat dinner. So after a fun day checking out different antique shops I began searching my phone. I saw Something Different but wasn’t sure. They’re not your typical die-hard BBQ restaurant. I did remember a reader telling me some time ago that I needed to try them. Well Tammy was searching too and she said we should try them. So off we went. Also not a bad choice since they were about 5 minutes from where we were.

The Restaurant and Staff at Something Different:

To start I want to say that I love Urbanna. They have a small town charm about them and it just seems like a great place. Something Different fits right in. Everyone was friendly and welcoming. The restaurant décor was warm and inviting. So far I was glad we came.

Next comes our waiter, Kaleb. Yes, Kaleb with a K. His mom had a reason for not spelling his name with a C. You’ll have to ask him that one. None the less, Kaleb was awesome. He knew all the in’s and out’s on the menu and was very helpful with all our questions. He told us about his favorites. Kaleb is one of those people you meet and can tell right away he is just full of life and personality. You get the picture. Now let’s talk food.

Tammy’s Choices at Something Different:

Something Different

Brisket and Pulled Pork with Beets and Mac & Cheese.

Tammy ordered a Two Meat Combo with Mac & Cheese and Beets. The meal also comes with a couple of Hoecakes, aka Fried Cornbread, but better. The Hoecakes are shaped like small pancakes. They are a cornbread mixture that was really good. Later, Kaleb brought us some molasses to put on them which made them even better. Tammy really enjoyed the beets. This was one of Kaleb’s recommendations and favorites. I didn’t try them there were none left so they must have been good. The mac & cheese was awesome, creamy and cheesy. Tammy said it was the best she’s had including her own. To that I will only say that she makes a pretty mean mac & cheese herself.

Let’s talk about the meats at Something Different. Looking at the pictures you’ll notice the pulled pork looks different than what we typically see at BBQ restaurants. When talking to Kaleb before we left I told him that at first sight I didn’t expect much. But let me tell you the pork was wonderful. There was some bark mixed in and the flavor was killer. Yes, it was different. It seemed to have a very slight vinegar taste mixed in. You need to try this pork.

You’re probably looking at the brisket thinking the same thing. You don’t see a smoke ring. However, just like the pork, the brisket was outstanding. It had a great flavor and was so moist and tender it just melted in your mouth.

Something Different

Pulled Pork and Tri Tip Beef with Kickin’ Fries and Baked Beans.

My Choices at Something Different:

I also ordered a Two Meat Platter. They had a picture in the menu of a Pork and Tri Tip Beef that really looked good to me so I went for that. I had Kickin’ Fries and Baked Beans for my sides. And I got the Spicy Hoecakes. They were the same awesome Hoecakes that Tammy had only better with the addition of jalapenos. That was a nice little additive giving them a little kick but not over the top hot. The fries were great. They were hand cut with a really good seasoning on them. The baked beans were good also. They weren’t overdone but yet seasoned just right for some wonderful baked beans. Two good sides.

Since we already talked about the pork I’ll get straight to the Tri Tip Beef. Though it’s not a normal BBQ joint item I feel it’s very much worth talking about. This beef at Something Different was awesome. It comes medium rare which I don’t usually do. That was a little risky for me. But there was no blood so I did well with the visual test. Once I tasted it I loved this beef. It had so much flavor and was just outstanding. I will get the Tri Tip Beef again.

German Chocolate Pie with Cappalotchina Mocha Ice Cream.

Then Came Dessert:

Let me just start by saying you have to save room for dessert at Something Different. Their pies, cakes and ice cream are homemade. Yes the ice cream too.

Tammy ordered a piece of German Chocolate Pie with Cappalotchina Mocha Ice Cream. And yes, I contacted the owner for the name and spelling of this ice cream. You can ask for the “coffee/mocha” ice cream with the long name and they will know what you’re talking about. Kaleb recommended the pie and the ice cream to Tammy. It was to die for. You do have to like dark chocolate to really enjoy the pie but the combination was just outstanding.

I, on the other hand, tend to stick to more basic choices. I went with Peach Cobbler with Cookies and

Cream Ice Cream. Again, both are homemade. And there was nothing basic about it other than the name. The cobbler was delicious. Both the cobbler and the ice cream had so much flavor that when they combined they were just awesome.

Final Thoughts on Something Different:

Ok, so we enjoyed our visit and our meals and our desserts at Something Different. I think you can tell that. Let me reiterate the fact that the pork and brisket do not look like the typical meats you’ll find at typical BBQ restaurants. Well, this is Something Different, not something typical. We love trying different styles of BBQ. The people at the restaurant were awesome. Everything was kept very clean and neat. Tables were cleaned off as soon as customers left. All of our food was outstanding and our waiter was one of the best we’ve had. What more can anyone ask for at a restaurant? I’m also going to figure ways to get back up there to try some seafood. They are right on the water and I believe Urbanna is a fishing/seafood type town. We definitely will be back. Thank you all for a great experience at Something Different!

Thanks. Kaleb had told us about before the move. I know we really enjoyed everything. I do want to come back to try some seafood. It’s hard to find good fresh seafood.
