Route 60 BBQ Market

Today I’d like to tell you about Route 60 BBQ Market in Williamsburg, VA. It sure seems like forever since we visited a new restaurant. As I’m sure many of you are doing we have cut our travels just about out. With the Covid19 Virus out there we have decided to just stay pretty close to home. Well Williamsburg fits that category and we were lucky to find a new location to try out. So I am happy to be able to tell you about this restaurant.

The Restaurant and Staff at Route 60 BBQ Market:

Route 60 BBQ Market has only been open for a couple of months. Seems Williamsburg is becoming a hotspot for BBQ. They are actually located in the same building that Red, Hot & Blue used to be in. The owner is the same but wanted to shed the franchise to go independent. The décor has changed with the conversion. Gone are the Memphis Blues pictures. The restaurant has more of a down home feel to it.

There are other changes too. You now order at a counter when you come in the door. They were very helpful answering questions about the

menu. Once you order you can go get your drinks and pick a seat. They will bring the food out to you. Everything was well spaced out and clean. I had no uneasy feelings about being in there during this pandemic. Everyone was very nice there.

Our Choices at Route 60 BBQ Market:

Tammy was going to get some brisket until we found out that Route 60 BBQ Market has Burnt Ends. They are listed as a snack so she had to order some Fried Tanglers to go with them for a side. The fried tanglers are house cut battered and fried onions. They’re served with a bbq ranch dressing. They are excellent and also listed as a snack, not a side. Then there are the burnt ends. They were wonderful. They’re cooked with a slight glaze on them and charred up just right. BBQ Sauce was served on the side just in case you wanted to dip a little. You don’t need it though. Tammy was a happy camper.

So I had to go with The Triple Platter. I chose Pulled Pork, Sliced Brisket and a Smoked Sausage Link. I picked Potato Salad and Granddad’s BBQ

Beans for sides and a cup of Brunswick Stew as an extra. The sides were homemade and were really good. The potato salad had a little more mayo than I prefer but it was good. Tammy loved it. The bbq beans I really enjoyed. They were cooked in a chili sauce with a little chili powder kick to them. I thought they were excellent. The Brunswick stew was kicking too. And it did have a little punch to it. Nothing too hot but enough to let you know it’s there. I loved it.

And then there were the meats. The pulled pork was really good. Tender and not dried out. They do garnish it with a little bbq sauce. It was not drenched in it so the sauce did not drown out the flavor of the pork. I do think next time I would ask for it without any sauce. Same went for the brisket. Just a light garnish of sauce. Not enough to hurt it but I’d prefer no sauce. It was still very good. The brisket was also tender. You could just pull it apart with your fork. Nice job on the brisket. I really liked the smoked sausage link. It was not real spicy, just a good flavor. The smoke and then searing it on a grill was, again, excellent.

A Little Extra at Route 60 BBQ Market:

Route 60 BBQ Market

Cantina Smoked Tacos.

You know, it’s not very often we get to visit a restaurant twice before posting about it. This time we did. It just so happened that on our first visit I forgot to take a picture of the outside of the restaurant. So back across the Jamestown Ferry we came for a picture of Route 60 BBQ Market and decided we might as well try something else on their menu since we were there. Here’s how it went.

Tammy ordered the Cantina Smoked Tacos. This is 3 tacos with your choice of pulled chicken, pulled pork or Texas Brisket. Tammy went with 1 of each and chose Potato Salad for her side. I’ve already said that she loves the potato salad here. But the tacos, well they were awesome. I tried them also and enjoyed each variety. I do think if I were to order them I’d go with 2 brisket and 1 pork. Tammy said she’d go back just for the tacos.

Route 60 BBQ Market

The Texan with Route 60 Fries.

And me. Well I ordered The Texan with Rt. 60 Fries. The fries are seasoned waffle fries, very good. But the Texan was the bomb. It had a layer of Texas Links, a layer of Brisket and topped with another layer of Links and sauce on top. That sandwich was so good and plenty messy. I loved it and would probably go back for another.

While we were there they had a young man keeping the dining room clean. He was very pleasant and really friendly. We did enjoy talking to him a little as he did his work. It didn’t hurt that he loved the Jeeps parked out front. He helped us to feel very comfortable in there while dining. For that I thank you.

Final Thoughts:

Well we were very pleased with Route 60 BBQ Market on both visits. They are doing a wonderful job smoking their meats. We loved our sides. Customer service was wonderful. The whole experience was really good. Tammy and I were surprised to see Red, Hot and Blue gone and that someone would try to pick up where they left off with another BBQ Restaurant. I am glad to see they left the franchise and went out on their own. These are the places we love to find.

So as much as we go over to Williamsburg I’m sure we will be back. And again, even during this time when restaurants are very restricted on how many they can serve and only a certain amount of tables can be open, we were very comfortable. And that is important right now. Thank you Route 60 BBQ Market, we enjoyed our visit and will be back.
