Fire Pigs BBQ, Onley, VA

Fire Pigs BBQ

Today we’re riding up the Eastern Shore of VA to visit Fire Pigs BBQ in Onley. I love the ride up Highway 13 and going across the Bay Bridge Tunnel. Even with the summer traffic it was a great ride. Just set the cruise control so you don’t get in trouble and enjoy the ride. We also hit up several antique shops along the way. This was just a fun ride for us.

The Restaurant and Staff:

Fire Pigs BBQ started out doing competitions on the BBQ Circuit. The owner was a Fire Fighter for almost 35 years so he wanted a name to give tribute to both Fire Fighters and Pigs. I love the name and the tribute. They did the competitions for a couple of years. One of the employees told us that they ran a food truck for about a year prior to opening up the restaurant.

Fire Pigs BBQ is located in Four Corner Plaza, a shopping center right on Hwy. 13 on the southbound side. It’s a really nice spot and they’ve only been open since April 9 so everything is still new and looking good in the dining room. They really did a nice job on the inside with the dining room. It was comfortable and inviting.

Andrea was working the counter and greeted us as soon as we entered. She was so nice and very friendly with us. Made us feel welcomed like we were regulars. She quickly found out this was our first visit and began helping us with the menu items. Another employee, Leeann came into the picture and took up conversation with us making us feel even better about being there. Both young ladies were wonderful and did a great job even when I asked dumb questions. Thanks ladies.

Our Choices at Fire Pigs BBQ:

Fire Pigs BBQ

Fire Pigs BBQ #1 Platter. Ribs, Pulled Pork & Sliced Brisket.

Today Tammy and I ordered the same platters but with different sides. The platter came with 1/4 pound Sliced Brisket, 1/4 pound Pulled Pork and a 1/2 Rack of Ribs. You order your sides separately so you can get just what you want with your meal. I chose Baked Beans and Loaded Potato Salad. Tammy went with the Loaded Potato Salad also plus Hushpuppies and Macaroni & Cheese. All of these sides are homemade.

Let me start with I wasn’t thinking with the loaded potato salad. I don’t like sour cream. Think of a loaded baked potato, there’s sour cream. So no, I didn’t care a lot for it. Tammy did like it a lot. If you like a loaded potato then go for this potato salad. The baked beans were awesome. I loved their flavor. And the mac & cheese was wonderful. Lots of cheese and simply delicious. The real treat came with the hushpuppies. They were incredible. Andrea told us how good they were so we tried them out. Oh how right she was.

#1 Platter plus Loaded Potato Salad, Hushpuppies, and Mac & Cheese.

Now for the meats. The brisket is sliced thin. It had a really good flavor and a nice smoke ring. Hard to go wrong with it. And the ribs, well they were wonderful. They do come with some sauce but not so much that you can’t taste the smoke and the ribs. I did see a picture on their Facebook page with no sauce. I’d love to give them a try also. Now for the pulled pork. Fire Pigs BBQ has some outstanding pulled pork. It has a unique slightly sweet flavor. I really liked it because it was different from the norm. It also heats well for lunch the next day.

A Little Extra:

I noticed on Fire Pigs BBQ Facebook page some comments about deep fried ribs. Yes this brought back memories of our trip to Louisiana and my first experience with these delights. So naturally I had to order some to try. I ordered them to go but had to try one before leaving. Now I’ll say that I probably drove Leeann crazy questioning her about these ribs. When you look at them you don’t see any breading. I thought they messed my order up. These little babies rocked. There was just a light breading on them, deep fried and then a little sauce. Wonderful! Only drawback is that they are a special, not a menu item. Watch their page.

The last part of this outing was a piece of Homemade Lemon Pound Cake. Tammy couldn’t resist. I would have went for the Dump Cake but couldn’t eat anything else. Tammy said if you had or have a grandmother that bakes cakes this would be like her cakes. It was that good. So there you go, save some room for homemade desserts too.

Final Thoughts:

I will tell you straight up that I’m going back to Fire Pigs BBQ. Another special they run but did not have this trip is Texas Twinkies. These are Jalapenos stuffed with brisket and cream cheese, wrapped in bacon. Have mercy. I will make a trip up the Eastern Shore to try those. I’ll have to watch their page too.

But in addition to that there are many other menu items and specials that look awesome. Thousands of people travel Highway 13 going up and down the Eastern Shore to get to their destinations. You should make this a destination along the way.

Now For Your Thoughts:

So like I said Fire Pigs BBQ has not been opened long. But being on that major highway I’m sure plenty of people have stopped by there. Give us your thoughts. How did your visit go? Any recommendations for others to try out? Join in and let us know how it went.

A small town restaurant has to have the support of the locals to survive. We’d love to hear from some regulars. I noticed a lot of to go business while we were there. Tell us what you come back for time and time again. What’s your favorites? Can someone tell us about the Texas Twinkies and the Loaded Fries? Maybe the Chicken & Dumplings. I think everyone gets the message. Help fill us in on the rest of the story.

Just scroll down and leave some comments so I can get them posted as soon as possible. Tell us all about your bbq restaurant.

I look forward to hearing from you.

I encourage you to share this review on Facebook and other social media sites. Follow us on Facebook to see where else we go.

You can find them on Facebook at: https://www.facebook.com/FirePigsBBQ/

Enjoy the ride, good eating and thanks for stopping by.

I tried the Texas Twinkies a few weeks ago. Definitely worth the trip. Cookies good, too, when they have ’em.

So first off I’m a live here, born here, but I grew up in eastern Carolina. And let’s be honest, Eastern NC has the best bbq. (Just has to put that in there for my fellow bbq peeps, lol) I have to say their pulled pork is fabulous!!!! I’ve waited a LONG time for someone here to make something that comes even close and these guys have nailed it! They even have a Carolina vinegar based sauce that is amazing! I really think they made it just for me! 🙂
I started eating lunch there when they had the food truck, and the food has just gotten better. The hush puppies are wonderful but I do love that potato salad. I had the pleasure of trying the Texas Twinkies, my co worker brought me one. First off, there are no words. This was AMAZING! I now watch their Facebook page daily for these!!!
So please if you’re lucky enough to come through our beautiful Eastern Shore, make sure you make time to stop and enjoy some good eats!

Audrey, thank you so much for your wonderful comments. And having grown up and still living in southeastern VA I was raised on eastern Carolina bbq. I now have an appreciation of all bbq. This was a great stop for us and we do come over there for fun outings to get away. We have a new stop. Can’t wait to try the Texas Twinkies. Thanks for joining in.

I first visited FIRE PIGS when I was picking up my mom’s clothes from the local cleaners. The smell coming from their food truck was hypnotizing. I tossed the clothes over my shoulder & made my order, the pulled pork sandwich platter with hush puppies, coleslaw, & a can of Sprite. After the first three bites I was hooked! I went back later that evening hoping to get some for dinner, unfortunately they were already closed. Since the first visit can’t count the number of times I’ve visited or the number of people I’ve told about FIRE PIGS BBQ. While I think the deep fried ribs are my favorite you can’t go wrong with anything on the menu.
