NC BBQ Restaurants

Goodtimes Bar-B-Cue, Pilot Mountain, NC

June 11, 2016

We hunted down Goodtimes Bar-B-Cue while taking a little trip out to the mountains. We had found them on line and wanted to give them a try. So one evening we made our way there for a late diner.

Where Is Goodtimes Bar-B-Cue?

Goodtimes Bar-B-Cue is located in Pilot Mountain, NC. They are on Highway 52 just west of Mt. Airy, NC. Not too hard to find. We actually cut over from I-77 on I-74 to the Hwy. 52 Bypass exit to get there. This area seemed to be a pretty cool place to check out. They have the “Mayberry/Andy Griffith” attractions and several antique stops if you’re into that type of stuff. Check them out on the web before going.

The Restaurant and Staff:

So back to Goodtimes Bar-B-Cue. They have a nice restaurant with some seating inside and some outside on a covered patio. Inside was very clean and neatly decorated with musical instruments and pictures on the walls. A walk down memory lane and the good ole days. Our waitress, Kennedy, was as sweet as she could be. She helped with our choices and walked us around the items that they were out of. She was very apologetic for not having some of the food on the menu. We assured her it was not her fault. Sorry to say that they were out of brisket. In reality I think it’s good when these restaurants sell out. That means they had a good day.

So we worked around the menu and came up with our choices.

I ordered the Pulled Pork Plate with Hot Potatoes and BBQ Slaw. The pork had a nice smoke flavor. I used just a little of their Eastern NC Sauce and it was excellent. I really enjoyed the bbq slaw. This was a new experience for me. For anyone that doesn’t know what bbq slaw is allow me to explain. It’s your basic

coleslaw but instead of using mayo, they used a tomato/vinegar base sauce. I liked it a lot. The hot potatoes were great also. They were thin sliced, cooked to order potatoes seasoned with an Old Bay type seasoning. You need to try them. My plate was also served with cornbread straws. I say straws so you don’t confuse them with the larger sticks you may get at other restaurants. These straws were about 3/8” diameter and 3 – 4” long. They tend to curl some when dropped into the hot

grease for cooking. They were really good and different from the normal. Just another plus for Goodtimes Bar-B-Que.

Tammy went out on a limb this time and tried something totally new to us. She ordered a Pulled Pork

Quesadilla. It was made with a chipotle pimento cheese, bbq, and red onions. It was served with a house made ranch style dressing for dipping. Tammy let me have a piece of it to try. I thought it was real good and definitely different. I preferred it without the dipping sauce but I don’t like a lot of ranch dressing. This was intended for an appetizer, not a meal. Tammy said it was enough for her that night. That could have been because she had already eyed the desserts, but I’m not sure.

We did get dessert though. Tammy ordered a Chocolate Mousse Pie that she said was to die for. I think

she meant that I’d die if I went for it. So you’ll have to take her word for it. I went for their Peach Cobbler with Vanilla Ice Cream. Now that was awesome. It even had a great crust. Served warm with ice cream made it near perfect.

Final Thoughts:

We did enjoy our visit to Goodtimes Bar-B-Cue. Everyone there was super nice and friendly. I only wish I could have tried their brisket. Hopefully next time. Yes this was another definite good stop on the BBQ Trail. Give them a try.
