VA BBQ Restaurants

Bobby’s BBQ, Chesapeake, VA

September 26, 2015

I went to Bobby’s BBQ some time ago and was not very impressed with the food. So I decided to try them again before writing this post. I’m glad that I did. Not because I feel they have achieved greatness but I felt I needed my memory refreshed.

Well here we go…

First I’d like to say that they are better than I remember. Some things have changed according to the notes written from my first visit and my latest visit. I’ll focus only on the latest visit since it was the better of the two.

I was greeted and seated immediately as I walked in the front door. They were very nice and friendly. My waitress was also friendly. I think she did a pretty good job. The restaurant was very clean. That was nice.

I ordered their Brisket and Pulled Pork Combo with fried okra and baked beans. Hushpuppies came with it also.

Bobbys BBQ Chesapeake VA 2The okra and hushpuppies were good. The baked beans were really good. That said let’s talk about the meat choices.

First the pulled pork. It was moist and had the NC Vinegar based flavor. There was only a slight smoke ring and there was no smoke flavor. The vinegar out flavored the pork. Towards the bottom of the cup the meat picked up some hot spices. I’d rather taste the smoke or a mild rub than the hot spice.

Then the brisket. I’m sorry but the brisket just tasted like thin sliced roast beef to me. There was no smoke ring, no smoke flavor, and no flavor from spices or rubs. This just didn’t do a lot for me.

I was also disappointed with the serving platter and the amount of food I received for the price. I paid $21.99 for this combo. It was served on a small stainless platter. The okra and hushpuppies were on paper on the platter. The brisket, pulled pork, and baked beans were in styrofoam cups on the platter. I think for that price there should have been more food and maybe even a plate.

Over all I’d have to say they are average to me. If I lived close to them I might would stop there once in a while if I didn’t feel like driving far. But there is a lot of very good BBQ too close to that location for me to drive as far as I did for average. I’d drive a little further for very good or excellent.

Well that does it for me on this restaurant. Any comments are welcome. They have to be doing something right just based on the number of employees there and the fact that they are staying in business there.

Let me know what you think.
