The BBQ Shack, Chesapeake, VA

The BBQ Shack

Today I want to tell you about The BBQ Shack in Chesapeake, VA. They are a small family spot just off of George Washington Hwy. They’re between Military Hwy and I-64. It’s a very nice location but also very easy to miss on your first visit. I used GPS. I had seen them on line before but for some reason I thought they were in Great Bridge. They’re actually more towards the Deep Creek area. While I wasn’t allowed to do a lot of traveling, this seemed like a good time to go check them out.

The Restaurant and Staff:

The BBQ Shack is a very small place. They have inside seating for 7 – 8 people and a few more spots outside. We went at lunchtime and were able to get a seat. I noticed that they do a lot of carry-out business. Looks like lots of folks out working stop in to grab some lunch to take with them. The young man who waited on us was very nice. He took the orders as someone in the back put them all together. Everything seemed to run rather smoothly.

Our Choices at The BBQ Shack:

Tammy ordered a Sampler Plate with Mac & Cheese and Slaw. It comes with Pulled Pork, Sliced Brisket and Smoked Turkey Breast. The mac & cheese was good but just a little too soupy. The slaw was very good. It was finely chopped and had a little twang to it.

The BBQ Shack

Sampler Plate with Baked Beans, Potato Salad and a side of Brunswick Stew.

The pork had an excellent flavor along with a slight NC Vinegar flair to it. If you like a little hint of vinegar but not overpowering you’ll like this bbq. The brisket was lean and also tender. It had a wonderful smoke flavor to it. The turkey breast was even rather tasty with a good smoke flavor. And you know that I’m not the biggest turkey or chicken fan there is. Tammy loved it. All three of the meats were well prepared. Someone is doing an excellent job on the smoker. I think what I found surprising was that no one has ever told us about The BBQ Shack. This was just a well-kept secret for some reason.

I also did the Sampler. My sides were Baked Beans and Potato Salad. I also added a small cup of Brunswick Stew to my order. The beans were wonderful. The BBQ Shack did a great job with plenty of seasoning in their recipe. And the potato salad was a fantastic Southern Style blend. Both of my sides were excellent.

I fell in love with the Brunswick Stew. It had a little pepper bite to it but not too much. I thought it was great. I’d love to go back and get some more of the stew.

Sandwiches and More at The BBQ Shack:

Well, Tammy and I had the chance to make a return trip to The BBQ Shack before posting my review. Like I said before, they are pretty close to home. This time we tried a couple of their sandwiches. And just so you know, these sandwiches are wrapped in a foil wrapper which does a great job of keeping everything on the sandwich and off of you.

Tammy got the Beef and Cheddar. It comes in three sizes, you choose. The beef and cheddar is a sliced brisket sandwich with melted cheddar cheese on it. The brisket is sliced about 1/4 inch thick, maybe a shade more. The smoke flavor really came through as well as being really tender. And then the cheddar just made it a wonderful gooey mess. It was awesome.

I had to step it up a little. I went with the Mojo Beef Sandwich. This is pretty much the same as the Beef and Cheddar with the exception of having sliced jalapenos on it. I have to think this was one of the best brisket sandwiches that I’ve had in a very long time. And I had to get the Brunswick Stew again. Yes, it was just as good as the first time I tried it. We also found out from talking to Miranda that you can ask for onions and/or dill pickles on the sandwiches. She says that makes them even better.

We also had the chance to try a couple of desserts this time. We had a brownie and we tried some banana pudding. The brownie was wonderful. It was moist and had that nice little crunch around the edge that I love. And the banana pudding was delicious. It looks really plain but don’t let that fool you. If you like banana pudding, you’ll really like this one. So in addition to some awesome sandwiches, save some room for dessert.

Final Thoughts On The BBQ Shack:

I thought this was a great little stop. I’m surprised we’ve never been here before. They’re only about 35 minutes from home. They do have short hours serving mainly lunch and either a late lunch or very early dinner. They close at 5:00 during the week and at 2:00 on Saturday. Check their hours first. They’ve been serving bbq for 10 years now so they do have some experience. I thought everything we had was very good, the service was friendly and so were the other customers. I’m glad we finally made it and sorry it took so long for us to get there. We will have to go back, there were too many other items that sounded so good we need to check some out.

And we did make it back. This time we went a little later, after lunch, so the rush was over. We were able to meet and talk to Miranda this time around. She was wonderful to talk to and get to know a little more about the business. Her father, her husband, her brother and her are the family running the business. I hope I got that right. They are doing a great job serving up some outstanding bbq. I am really surprised that we have not stopped here before now. But make no bones about it, we are repeat customers now.

By the way, I saw on The BBQ Shack’s Facebook page a sandwich offered back in October, The MacDaddy. It was brisket, jalapeno and cheddar sausage, pulled pork topped with melted cheddar cheese, coleslaw and bbq sauce…Please, please bring that back. I need one.

I discovered The BBQ Shack years ago, and I have loved them ever since. My absolute favorite meal is their pulled pork, 2 sides of collards (because I seriously can’t get enough), and their cornbread. I’m as picky as they come, and I absolutely love it there. The family is always so kind and welcoming. Oh, and my new fave is their banana pudding.
Anyone who comes in town gets taken to The BBQ Shack.

Christina. Thank you for adding to this review. I don’t remember seeing collards on the menu. Doesn’t mean they weren’t. And you are so right about the banana pudding, it is awesome.
Thanks for your input. I’m sure The BBQ Shack will appreciate seeing all the comments from everyone.

Great review, they deserve it! My favorite BBQ spot! I am lucky enough to be 5 minutes away from them! Miranda and the rest of the family are great people too. I always get the BBQ sandwich & Mac and Cheese ( gotta say I disagree with you’re “too runny” comment) it’s delicious! Keep it up BBQ shack🤗

Dawn. 5 minutes away would be great. I could go through the menu pretty quickly. We loved talking to Miranda.
By the way, I’m always open for other’s opinions. No problem here. I’ve already communicated with The BBQ Shack about it. I will not say what we discussed but we will give it another try.
Thanks for your comments. I really do appreciate them.

    Hey guys,
I love the BBQ shack and I usually get the pulled pork sandwich or the turkey mojo. I love both of them. I haven’t tried anything else but have been there about ten or more times. Great article. I usually try to tell as many people as I can about them because it is so good.

    • Reply Patrick February 21, 2020 at 6:30 pm

Jason. Good to hear from you. Though I am not a big fan of Turkey or Chicken, the turkey at The BBQ Shack was good. I liked the pulled pork more. But when it came down to a sandwich the Mojo Beef was killer. Give it a try one day. Everyone there was very friendly when we visited also. It’ s great that you let everyone know about them. Take care and thanks for the comments.

I love the BBQ shack. I myself consider myself a barbecue connoisseur, I do a bit of my own smoking barbecue and ribs so I am picky when it comes to good barbecue. The food has always been delicious at the BBQ Shack and the staff has always been friendly and courteous. On your next visit I’d recommend trying the burnt ends and ribs. I love the burnt ends as they are cut straight from brisket and not drowned in sauce. The BBQ Shack has several different sauces for one to choose from if sauce is preferred. I personally love the flavor all on its own. I have several friends who all have barbecue businesses, including the Browns at the BBQ Shack. I like each establishment for each its own reasons but the BBQ Shack’s brisket and burnt ends mostly winds my business. Have a great day and happy eating!!

Thanks. Always good to hear from others about a restaurant I post about. There are several more items that I intend to try. Ribs and Burnt Ends are among them.
I appreciate you taking the time to make some more comments about The BBQ Shack. Hopefully others will join in so everyone who reads this will hear it from people other than me.
      Thanks again.

I grab a sandwich there often but most of the time I buy the brisket, turkey, and BBQ by the pound and take it home. I love the sauces. The staff is always nice and the food is always superb.

    • Reply Patrick February 22, 2020 at 10:26 am

Thanks Ray. It’s always good to hear back from regulars. You know this place better than I do. However I do plan to get to know them better. And my wife has already mentioned that I could go by there on the way home from work and deliver supper to us. Thanks for adding to their story.

My co workers and myself order from the BBQ shack at least once a week. We love everything we have ever ordered. Im particularly fond of the sampler w/collards and the mac& cheese. I also love the Busterboy, it has brisket, bbq, rib sauce and cheese and I usually ask for jalepenos to kick it up a little. The staff is always very friendly and welcoming. Bottom line, if you’ve never been there give it a shot you will not leave disappointed or hungry.

    • Reply Patrick February 22, 2020 at 10:22 am

Todd. Thanks for the comments. The Busterboy sounds awesome. I guess that will be something else for my “to try” list. I appreciate you filling us in on it. Thanks again.

My mom lives right next door to the BBQ shack. We eat there often when hanging at the pool during the summer. I have known the owners since i was a small child as they lived on the same street i grew uo on. They are some of the best people you will ever know and the generosity theybhave extended to my family during a recent loss of my father just makes you love them even more. I assure you your meals there will never dissapoint you.

I love to hear about community involvement. It’s great to have such a wonderful restaurant local that is also concerned about the people around them.
I am sorry to hear about your loss.
Thanks for sharing about The BBQ Shack.

By living right next door to the Bar B Que Shack I have eaten there a lot and everything on the menu is awesome. I have known Steve and Pam for years, they are wonderful people. Their bar b que goes a lot of places with me for events, I don’t eat bar b que or brisket from anywhere else. They are the “BEST’

    • Reply Patrick February 28, 2020 at 7:49 pm

Thanks for letting us know. I didn’t get to meet Steve or Pam but everyone we did meet was very friendly and a pleasure to meet.
It is good to hear they have so many local fans that really seem to love them.
      Thank you again.

The BBQ Shack has the best beef brisket around.Places like Guy Fiero’s & other local brisket smokers need to take note. I’m proud to say the “Shack” is a Deep Creek hidden jem & I hope it stays that way. Call me stingy if you will. 😁

    • Reply Patrick February 28, 2020 at 7:47 pm

Let’s not be stingy. The whole idea behind my blog is to help spread the word about some great places to get BBQ and Brisket.
I am glad to hear you love it so much. Thanks for sharing.
