Pungo Boys BBQ, Virginia Beach, VA

March 2, 2021

I want to take you on a little ride to check out Pungo Boys BBQ in Virginia Beach, VA. Pungo is an area of the beach that most probably do not know about. They are definitely in a rural area most people don’t even know Virginia Beach has. It is a beautiful area. They are known for the Pungo Strawberry Festival. So for Tammy and me, we are taking a ride from the country to the country, and that’s a nice Jeep Ride. There are several ways to get there but you’ll end up on Princess Anne Road. GPS will get you right to them.

The Restaurant and Staff at Pungo Boys BBQ:

Covid-19 restrictions has Pungo Boys BBQ in a tight corner right now. They are only allowed to have 3 tables in the dining room. There is room for a few more once restrictions ease up plus there is some counter space they’ll be able to use later as well. This didn’t seem to slow them down. We were fortunate that a couple was leaving just before we received our food so we managed a table for our visit. This was far better than eating in the Jeep. You’ll see why when I get to the food we had. They kept a pretty steady flow of to-go orders moving the whole time we were there.

The restaurant was started about a month and a half ago by 4 local Pungo guys who love BBQ. Tammy said 3 of them were there today. Plus there were a couple of ladies to keep everyone straight. Everyone was really nice. We enjoyed the whole visit. I even got a tour of the smoker out back. It’s a beast. The racks are special made to support smoking a split pig. I love getting tours.

Our Choices at Pungo Boys BBQ:

Pungo Boys BBQ Ponderosa Plater

Pulled Pork, Sliced Brisket and Homemade Kielbasa Sausage. With 9 Day Cole Slaw and Mac & Cheese.

Today Tammy and I ordered some of the same things again. I know, we don’t usually do that but it just worked out that way this time. They really have a good menu at Pungo Boys BBQ with a nice variety of choices.

Today’s choices for us started with a Pungo Ponderosa Plater for each of us. This includes Pulled Pork, Sliced (or Chopped) Brisket and Homemade Sausage. Tammy had Kielbasa and I went with their Andouille Sausage. The platters also came with two sides. We both had Mac & Cheese. Tammy’s second side was their 9 Day Cole Slaw with a vinegar base. Mine was the Five Amigos BBQ Baked Beans plus an added side of Brunswick Stew. I think you can see why we didn’t want to eat in the Jeep.

Pungo Boys BBQ is serving some awesome Texas Style Brisket. The smoke and seasoning was outstanding. And you can see the bark in the pictures. This brisket was also super moist and tender. This is worth the trip. Then there’s the Pulled Pork. You can see the smoke ring when you look at the pictures. The taste is outstanding. Smoke, rub and maybe a slight hint of vinegar all come together in this mouthwatering serving of pulled pork. Tammy says there’s a hint of something she just can’t figure out. I say don’t try to figure it out, just eat and enjoy.

And lastly on the meats we had our Sausages. Tammy’s Kielbasa was wonderful. She tried it with their mustard sauce and decided it didn’t need any sauce. It was just that good. And as I mentioned earlier, homemade. I had the Andouille Sausage which had just a bit of spice to it. It was delicious. I also tried mine with the mustard sauce. The sauce was really good with the sausage but like Tammy, I soon decided to just go without sauce. The sausages were that good.

The Sides At Pungo Boys BBQ:

Pulled Pork, Sliced Brisket and Homemade Andouille Sausage. With Five Amigos BBQ Baked Beans, Mac & Cheese and Brunswick Stew.

Tammy’s 9 Day Cole Slaw was incredible. It has a vinegar base and I thought just a slight hint of sweet. They say the longer it sits the better it gets. Don’t let the 9 day thing scare you. Give this a try. Don’t worry though. If you’re not up to that, they also offer a creamy slaw. Neither of us tried it. Next was the Mac & Cheese. We both ordered it. What can you say about this comfort food that goes with bbq as well as anything? It’s creamy and cheesy and wonderful, that’s what.

Lastly was the Five Amigos BBQ Baked Beans. If you look at Pungo Boys BBQ’s website you can see an even better picture of these beans. Their picture does them far more justice. These beans were awesome. Great sauce and mixture of 5 or 6 beans all rolling around in the smoker picking up that smoke and extra seasoning. I could eat a pan of them.

And for the final touch I ordered a cup of Brunswick Stew. This was some of the best I’ve had in quite some time. It was full of meat and veggies. The flavor was just spectacular. At first I thought about using a fork with all the meat in this stew. If you like Brunswick Stew or even if you’re not a huge fan, you need to try this out. You’ll not regret it.

Final Thoughts on Pungo Boys BBQ:

So you can tell where I’ve gone with Pungo Boys BBQ. Oh, and just to top everything off, we heard a lady talking about their Meatball Po Boy Sub. Once that conversation started, we had to try one of them too. So I picked up a meatball sub to take home for later. Just a side note here. I heated the sub in the oven later that evening and those were some of the best meatballs I have ever had. There’s an Italian in the bunch somewhere. As well as another cup of Brunswick Stew. And yes, our leftovers. Remember, never go to one of these places without a cooler.

Tammy and I both love this place. And as it turns out they’re only about 45 minutes from us. This is a trip worth making. Great people serving up some great food. I hope they are super successful with this restaurant. We look forward to returning. I have seen some other items on the menu that may require me to check out.

With all the Covid19 restrictions and just being concerned about the spread of it, it is really awesome to be able to get out and find a new restaurant to try. We haven’t made it to many over the past year so I get a little excited when we find one this good. Remember, they’ve only been there a month and a half. Great job everyone involved with Pungo Boys BBQ.

As a life-long resident of Pungo, I was excited to see Pungo Boys BBQ open up. I’ve eaten there three times already and have enjoyed everything I have ordered, The baked beans are some of the best I’ve ever had. I’m glad you enjoyed it.
