Megallons Gourmet Barbeque

Today we made a visit to Megallons Gourmet Barbecue in Norfolk, VA. Tammy and I thought we’d ride down to Ocean View for a walk on the beach. You know, one last time before the tourist season kicks in. Well when its 75 degrees and sunny it doesn’t matter what season it is. The beach was too crowded for us. So as I was thinking about getting on I-64 and heading towards Yorktown, Tammy was on her phone hunting for bbq. She found this one and we were very close to them already so we decided to give them a try. Here’s what we found.

The Restaurant and Staff:

Megallons Gourmet Barbecue is on Little Creek Road in Norfolk, VA. They weren’t far from the Ocean View Beaches even though the owner, Donald, says they don’t get a lot of beach traffic. The restaurant is small. They have a couple of tables and some counter seating. They also do a lot of take-out business. We were welcomed as soon as we entered and took a seat at the counter. It was a very friendly atmosphere. We talked about the food selections a little before placing our order. Everything was homemade.

Megallons Gourmet Barbecue has been in business in this location going on 24 years. Donald says he doesn’t read a lot of reviews. As long as the people are coming in and supporting his business then he must be doing something right. He does go to other bbq restaurants too, not to check out the competition but just because he loves bbq. That’s pretty cool. One other thing about their restaurant, it’s hard to miss. They’re in a little pink building. Not florescent pink but the shade that makes you think about pigs. Let’s see how it went.

Sliced Pork with Fries and Slaw.

Our Choices at Megallons Gourmet Barbecue:

Tammy ordered a Sliced Pork Plate with Beer Battered Fries and Slaw. The fries were awesome, I loved them and so did Tammy. Now that I’m writing this I realize that she didn’t let me taste the slaw. She said it’s delicious but I don’t know. Donald said it is his mom’s and grandmother’s recipe and he has never tasted it. He does not like mayo. But everyone tells him how good it is so he keeps making it. The sliced pork had a really good flavor. At Megallons Gourmet Barbecue they like to use persimmon wood. It gives a slightly sweeter smoke flavor than some other woods.

Chopped Pork with Potato Salad and Baked Beans.

I had the Chopped Pork Plate with Potato Salad and Baked Beans. The beans were wonderful. They are cooked in a thick barbecue style sauce. Nice choice for dinner tonight. The potato salad was equally good. It had good sized chunks of potatoes, cooked perfectly and a great taste to it. The mayo was not overpowering and it all came together very well. Now the chopped pork is more like what some would call minced. It’s chopped very fine. It did have a great flavor and just a little sauce mixed in with it. Donald thinks of it as being closer to a Memphis Style bbq but it doesn’t have the heat to go with it. I really enjoyed it.

Dessert:

Chocolate Pecan Pie.

Tammy spotted the homemade dessert list and had to check out the Chocolate Pecan Pie. She did let me taste this and it was some kind of good. The chocolate was a deep, not too rich chocolate. It reminded me of a chocolate chess pie filling. However you want to describe it, the pie was fantastic. Be sure to save some room. I hear the double chocolate brownies are pretty awesome too. Maybe next time.

Final Thoughts:

Well there you go with my take on Megallons Gourmet Barbecue. You can tell that we really enjoyed this stop. We loved talking to Donald and hearing about his cooking experience. When we pulled into the parking lot we were thinking this is a cute little hole in the wall. Well don’t be discouraged or surprised. Go on in the little pink building and try this place out. I think you’ll be glad you did. I do believe we will be back for more.
