HogsHead Café

It’s time for us to pay a visit to HogsHead Café in Richmond, VA. I’ve been putting them off for a while. You see, there are a few spots in Richmond we haven’t been to yet. Partly because we’ve been trying to get to places further away. I know if we get in a pinch for time I can make a run to Richmond. So enough putting them off. Let’s visit HogsHead Café and see what they got.

The Restaurant and Staff:

HogsHead Café is located in the shopping center across the street from Sam’s Club on West Broad St. From the outside I thought they were going to be a little bigger than they were. They did have probably 10 – 12 tables plus a few seats at their counter. We did just fine but it did get a little crowded as they got busier. Maybe it seemed a little small because of the crowd that came in behind us. Our waitress, Annie, seemed like she was having a long day but she still did a good job waiting on us. I think she was tired. Annie and the other waitress were both friendly. They were both helpful and hustling to keep up with the customers as the dining room filled. And they were both troopers. They were still running when we finished up and

Our Choices at HogsHead Café:

Today Tammy ordered the Pulled Pork Plate with Corn Pudding and Mac & Cheese. HogsHead Café doesn’t offer brisket. So the mac & cheese was wonderful. It had lots of cheese and a great homemade flavor. Tammy said the corn pudding was excellent and thought that even I would like it. No thanks. I have never been into corn pudding so you’ll have to take her word for it. The pork had a really good flavor. It wasn’t overly smoked but had a good seasoning to it. Tammy really liked it. She tried the Spicy Mustard Sauce…it lived up to its name. I don’t think she saw spicy on the label. After that she tried the sweet sauce and liked that one.

Ribs with Fries and Baked Beans.

I ordered a half rack Baby Back Ribs with Fries and Baked Beans. The fries were good. They were just crinkle cut fires with a little seasoning on them. I did like them. The baked beans were killer. They were a little sweet and had a little bite to them. It was almost like a vinegar bite, I’m just not sure, but they were good. I had the ribs without sauce. There still was no strong smoke presence but the rub was outstanding. I think it may have had a little brown sugar and some pepper. Whatever it was, I really liked them.

Tammy also ordered a slice of Orange Creamsicle Pie. Although I never had a chance to taste it, she assures me that it was very good. Guess I had to order my own.

So today we had a really nice visit to HogsHead Café. I’m glad we were able to visit them. They have a nice restaurant, good staff and good food. Again, how can you go wrong with that combination? They were also doing a good take-out business while we were there. It seemed that we were in the right place at the right time today. I loved the unique flavors and that they were just different from many other places. I would return for more.
