Buddy’s BBQ VA, Rocky Mount, VA

Buddy's BBQ VA

Well today we hit the road for my birthday and eventually ended up at Buddy’s BBQ VA. It was a nice ride leaving Suffolk around 7:00 AM heading for Charlottesville then a little ride down the Blue Ridge Parkway. There were so many people there that we didn’t stay on it long. And no, as of 10/17 the trees were not turning much yet. So we finally made it to Rocky Mount, VA around 4:30 in the afternoon. I had hoped for earlier but we didn’t make it. Anyway, here’s how it went.

The Restaurant and Staff at Buddy’s BBQ VA:

Buddy’s BBQ VA is located in Rocky Mount Plaza on Tanyard Rd. It’s a nice location back in the corner of the plaza. Not hard to find. We actually came in from Bedford, VA and went right to them. I have to say that most everyone there was very friendly. Except for the most important one. The young lady who took our order was not so much. She seemed to be more interested in what was going on behind the counter than helping us. She did not give us a good first impression. Fortunately this was not the case with the other employees. One young lady said she just started the week before was very friendly and nice, as were the other people we talked with.

The dining room was nice and it was clean which is very important now days. They cleaned the tables as soon as someone left. And they did have the tables spread out for social distancing. So you enter the dining room and walk up to the counter to place your order. We chose our table and someone brought our food to us. Now moving on to the food.

Tammy’s Choices at Buddy’s BBQ VA:

Pork and Chicken Combo with Mac & Cheese and Green Beans.

Well we did as I thought and got there after the brisket had sold out. So, no brisket today. Tammy ordered the Chicken and Pork Combo. The combo comes with Slaw so she chose Mac & Cheese and Green Beans for her sides. The pulled pork was pretty good. It had a slight smoke flavor which didn’t overpower the meat. Buddy’s BBQ VA has a wide variety of sauces which they put out front for you. I didn’t try any of them this trip though some really looked interesting. The sauces also vary in the heat range. Her smoked chicken was really good. It had a good amount of smoke flavor, char on the skin and yet remained tender on the inside. Tammy gave me the wing to try and it was moist and tasty.

The slaw was different. Since I’m not a huge slaw fan I will only say that it has a slight sweet taste but it had another flavor that I couldn’t peg. So, Buddy don’t take it personal, there aren’t many slaws that I truly like. That’s just me. The other sides at Buddy’s BBQ VA were outstanding. The mac & cheese was delicious. It had a lot of cheese baked on top plus what had melted down into the macaroni. And the green beans were really seasoned just right. They were wonderful.

And My Choices at Buddy’s BBQ VA:

Pork and Ribs Combo with Mac & Cheese and Buddy’s Banging Baked Beans.

Well I went for the Pork and Ribs Combo. I had Mac & Cheese and Buddy’s Banging Baked Beans. Mine came with slaw as well. I’ve already talked about the pork, mac & cheese and the slaw so I’ll just move along.

The Banging Baked Beans were really good. They had sort of a smoky bbq sauce base. I thoroughly enjoyed the beans at Buddy’s BBQ VA. I have to say that the ribs were not my favorite today. They had some good flavor to them but they had been a little overcooked. Along the tops of the ribs were a little tough. Midway down to the bottom was where the better part was. Maybe they had just stayed in a warmer too long today. And that about does it for this trip.

Final Thoughts on Buddy’s BBQ VA:

So our trip to Buddy’s BBQ VA was pretty good overall. There were a couple of things that didn’t thrill us but not enough to stop us from stopping by again if we were in the area. I just hope the girl at the counter would be having a better day. After eating we did enjoy a nice long ride home. Rocky Mount, VA is a little over 4 hours away from home the way we went. You know I love the backroads. I would say check them out and see what you think.
