Barbecue Barn

Let’s pay a visit to Barbecue Barn down in Elizabeth City, NC. I had seen this restaurant listed some time back but for some reason I thought they had closed. Well someone in Elizabeth City told me that they were not closed and we should check them out. So, here we go.

Barbecue Barn Dining Room.

The Restaurant and Staff:

Barbecue Barn is on Weeksville Road. We came down on Hwy. 17. They weren’t hard to find. They have a nice building to themselves. They’re not in a shopping center. Their building is either fairly new or refurbished on the outside. It looks really nice. In fact we thought it might be a little fancy looking at the outside of the building. Don’t worry, it’s not fancy once you go in. Just a nice, clean, down to earth dining room with a friendly staff. The young lady at the counter was very nice. We placed our order and picked a seat. She brought the food out to us. Even the manager, I think, (or owner) came out of the kitchen to check on the customers and be sure everything was ok. He was really nice and genuinely cared about the customers. I liked him and was glad to see him checking on people.

Our Choices at Barbecue Barn:

Sliced Brisket with Onion Rings and Baked Beans.

One thing we ran into was that there are no combination platters where you can mix the BBQ items up. I think they did have a fried chicken and bbq combo. So here’s how we mixed up our orders to try everything out.

Tammy ordered a Brisket Dinner with Baked Beans and Onion Rings. She asked for her sauce on the side instead of on the meat. The beans were excellent. They had a nice thick sauce and good flavor to them. The Onion Rings were really good too. Made from large onions and a good batter on them they were fried perfectly. The brisket was sliced thick and had a good smoke flavor as well as a nice smoke ring. It was a little on the tough side like it had been reheated though. Still all in all it was not bad just not great.

I ordered a 1/2 Rack Plate with Baked Beans and Fried Okra. I also ordered Pork as an extra to make it a combo. The fried okra was good. It didn’t have any extra seasoning added to it but was a good side. The

ribs were ok but not my favorite. I ordered them without sauce so I could really taste the ribs and had JD Sauce on the side. I did add some sauce to them which they are usually served with, and they were much better.

Now the pork was excellent NC Style BBQ. The menu says pulled but it’s chopped. They had a wonderful blend of peppers and vinegar in the mix. Just like Eastern NC BBQ should be. I would definitely get the pork again.

Final Thoughts:

I think I’d say this was a pretty good stop. I really enjoyed the bbq and would get it again. You don’t find a lot of NC bbq any more. Honestly I probably would not order the ribs again but some people like them with sauce and that made all the difference. The people were friendly. The restaurant was clean inside and out. We felt very welcomed here. So yes, I’d recommend stopping by for some old fashioned bbq. Just sit back and enjoy it. If you’re in the area, stop in and see what you think.

One word of caution. According to their Facebook page the Barbecue Barn is closed on weekends.

They’ve only just closed on weekends because of Covid. I’m hoping once it blows over they’ll reopen on weekends. My favorite is the chicken and dumplings, the yams and the peas. This dish is usually only available on Wednesdays. Each day they offer a special. Now, if it’s not chicken and dumplin day I always order the large bbq and coleslaw sandwich. These are my usual eats, it’s close to my home and they have a drive up window.
