Ace Biscuit and Barbecue Revisited, Charlottesville, VA

Ace Biscuit and Barbecue

Tammy and I decided to take a good long Jeep Ride today and start with a trip to Ace Biscuit and Barbecue in Charlottesville, VA. I’ve wanted to go back here ever since we first visited them. I didn’t realize it had been so long. But we were in for a pleasant surprise. Ace Biscuit and Barbecue has relocated and upgraded their restaurant since our first visit. When I visited their website I thought things looked different. I sent them a message to be sure of their hours with the Covid19 restrictions still in place. Everything was good so bright and early we started on our 2-1/2 hour trip for brunch.

Just in case you’re wondering, you can read about our first visit at: https://www.patricksbbqtrail.com/ace-biscuit-and-barbecue-charlottesville-va/

The Restaurant and Staff:

Ace Biscuit and Barbecue looks great. The new location is much larger and just looks so clean and inviting. We loved the flooring that was installed. They were not allowed to use all of their tables but the dining room still held a fair amount of people while we all kept our distance. They’ve also added a beautiful bar in the restaurant. Wolf told us that they are not able to use it yet due to the restrictions in place. The new location is right around the corner from their former location, about a block over.

Wolf waited on us and talked to us between orders. We got there around 10:00 AM this time so we’d be able to try some new things. I started talking to Wolf about the biscuit he made for us on our last visit, he knew exactly what I was talking about. We found out that they moved to the new location about 4 months ago. Go figure, just in time to start and get shut down. Everyone working was friendly and doing an excellent job. It looked like the kitchen staff was ready to get busy so we placed our orders and had a seat. These guys are great at what they do. If you remember the first time I wrote about Ace Biscuit and Barbecue, this place is different from your normal BBQ restaurant so stick with me and see what they have.

Tammy’s Choices at Ace Biscuit and Barbecue:

Ace Biscuit and Barbecue

Pulled Pork, Pimento Cheese and Fried Egg Biscuit at Ace Biscuit and Barbecue.

Before I forget let me tell you, all the biscuits at Ace Biscuit and Barbecue are square. I say so you can get a square meal. Anyway, here we go.

Tammy tried for the same biscuit she had the first visit. It has a fried green tomato on the bottom, Pulled Pork on top of that, and a perfectly fried egg to top off the pork. And as if that wasn’t enough they put homemade Pimento Cheese on top with a pickle on the side. Well the only problem was they didn’t have any green tomatoes. So they added some homemade hash browns on the side to make up for it. The homemade biscuits here are wonderful. Just imagine the flavor explosion from everything on this biscuit. The pork was wonderful. It has a nice smoke flavor and seasoning to it. The smoke flavor isn’t overpowering. Everything blends together to create a perfect biscuit. And the hash browns were just icing on the cake. We loved them.

And My Choices at Ace Biscuit and Barbecue:

Ace Biscuit and Barbecue

Sliced Brisket, Caramelized Onions, Cheese and Fried Egg Biscuit.

Well to start out I wanted to try out the Brisket at Ace Biscuit and Barbecue. I was not disappointed. It had a great flavor as well as being moist and tender. I had it on a biscuit with cheese, caramelized onions, a perfect fried egg and just a touch of sauce to make it bold. By bold I mean just a slight bit of heat. This one wasn’t hard for me to imagine. I do like leftover brisket when I make breakfast skillets some weekends. I was thrilled with this biscuit. But there’s more.

I knew it was going to be a long day so I decided to try another biscuit. This time I chose their Spicy Sausage. I asked Wolf about the sausage before trying it and he assured me the sausage wasn’t so hot you’d break out in a sweat or tears from it. He was right. It has just a little heat to it. And it’s also homemade. This sausage has so much flavor it is unreal. And just a touch of heat to make it fantastic. Well they put this sausage on another homemade biscuit, topped it with cheese and you guessed it, another perfect fried egg. And after trying Tammy’s hash browns, I added a side of them to go with this biscuit. I was set for the day’s ride.

Final Thoughts:

I love Ace Biscuit and Barbecue. I can’t wait another year to go back this time. And they also do serve their pork, brisket and ribs as lunch plates. Then there are so many sides to choose from for lunch. I know I can’t go there every weekend but it’s a thought. I could change my route to my sister’s in W. VA to go out I-64. That could work. Wolf and his co-workers have put so much work into their new location and their pride shows. Throw in the fact that Wolf is just a great guy to talk to and you can’t go wrong. Great food, good conversation with genuine, friendly people and it’s a perfect mix. I do look forward to another visit soon.

This is a wonderful stop for anyone traveling on I-64. It’s also a great place to fuel yourself up for a ride on the Blue Ridge Parkway which is just a little further west from them. Stop in and try them out. I know you will not be disappointed.
