Smoken Que’s BBQ; Portsmouth, VA

January 23, 2016

How many of you have heard of Smoken Que’s BBQ in Portsmouth, VA? I think if they had been here years ago we may not have moved away from Churchland. Tammy gets the credit for finding this one. She located them doing internet searches looking for a bbq joint more local to us.

Where Are They?

Smoken Que’s BBQ is located on Stamford Road in the Churchland Shopping Center. It’s just off of High St. across from what used to be Churchland High School. It’s a small restaurant in the shopping center but both times we’ve been by there we saw their smoker in the parking lot in front of it. Makes it much easier to find.

What We Ate at Smoken Que’s BBQ:

I had to order the Smoked Picnic Platter of course. This came with Pulled Pork, Ribs, and a quarter of a chicken (leg and thigh). I’ll get to the sides in a minute. I will have to say to start that the ribs were very good but they were not my favorite. They did have a really good flavor though. As for the chicken, you know that I’m not a chicken fan at a bbq joint. However, the chicken at Smoken Que’s BBQ was really good. I’d get that again believe it or not. It just has a great smoke flavor along with being moist and juicy. But for me the best part was the pulled pork. It’s done NC Style. Smoked, tender and a nice vinegar base to it. Tammy also ordered the pulled pork. We really enjoyed it.

Now the side orders. I had slaw and mac & cheese. Tammy had cabbage and fried mac & cheese balls. I’m not sure which was best. I may lean towards her mac & cheese balls but as I said, they were all good. The final piece of resistance was the honey baked corn bread. Do not leave without eating some of this. Only problem was I had to eat it with my fork. But it was almost like eating desert. That bread was really good.

Smoken Que’s BBQ is a very small restaurant. They have two picnic tables in there and some chairs. Most orders are to go. Do not go here for fast food or you’ll be upset. They take their time and prepare each order. You’ll be glad they did. The staff was awesome. I’ll have to cheat and look at my receipt to see that the man who took our order was Kenny. We also chatted with the man who prepared our food. Both were very friendly. I’m sorry guys but I’m just terrible with names. Also I’m not clear but I believe they possibly share in ownership or managing the restaurant.

Whichever is the case it is clear that they both take a lot of pride in their work. For us the location is good. They’re not so far that we can’t go be for dinner or a weekend lunch. When we left we were already making plans for our next visit.

One side note. I know we’re talking bbq here but I’ve heard that their crab cakes are pretty awesome too. I plan to check them out next time.
