VA BBQ Restaurants

Mojo Bones, Ocean View, VA

November 13, 2015

Mojo Bones is one of our bbq stops that we found by doing a web search. Located just off of Shore Drive in Ocean View (Norfolk) they are a stone’s throw away from the Chesapeake Bay Beaches.

Be warned before I go any further with this review that Mojo Bones is a bar. You have to keep that in mind. So with that said, let’s get to the review.

The restaurant is decorated pretty neat. They have old license plates hanging around along with “Blues” type pictures. The tables are a little dated and the walls are a bit rough. They probably take a beating at night when the place gets kicking.

So, we have been there a few times for lunch. Things are pretty calm at lunchtime. Therefore if you don’t want the bar scene don’t go too late in the evening.

MoJo Bones BBQ Pulled Pork and Ribs Combo

Their food is really good. Here’s the breakdown of our last visit.

I ordered the pork and baby back ribs combo with Cajun fries. Coleslaw comes with it also. Both were really good. The pulled pork has a slight smoke and vinegar taste which I really like. I asked for my ribs to come without sauce which they gladly did. They had a very good flavor without sauce. I’m glad they let me have them that way. Cajun fries are good too. They are just fries with seasoning on them but really good. I was for the most part very pleased with my order.

Mojo Bones BBQ Pulled Pork and Beef Brisket Combo

Tammy ordered the Beef and Pork combo with sweet potato fries. Hers was really good also. Our waitress mentioned that she had tried these fries with their bbq sauce and really liked them. Tammy tried it and agreed. The brisket came with a little sauce. Mostly it was smoked and really good.

My drawback here is that I believe Mojo is a little overpriced. Not counting the tip for our waitress we paid a little over $44 for lunch. Tammy’s platter only had two slices of brisket which seemed a little short of 1/3 pound but I don’t know for sure. The meals are served in a plastic basket with paper in it. This would be understandable during the bar time but if I’m going to spend close to 50 dollars for lunch it should at least come on some type of plate. Sorry guys. I just don’t feel that I got my money’s worth, even though the food was, as stated, very good.

Finally, let me end this one on a positive note. Like I said we have been here several times. I don’t think we have had the same waitress twice. We have always received very good service. Every waitress we have had has been very friendly and prompt to tend to our needs. Kudos to the waitress staff.

Anyways, we still like to stop in before or after a nice walk on the beach there. You can go in and relax at lunchtime. I’ll bet they can get wide open at night though. Don’t think I want to be a part of that. They also have a location near ODU but we have not tried that one.

Feel free to comment or just let me know how you feel about this place. I’d love to hear from others about them.
