Tammy and I were checking the internet for new places to go, and she found Backwoodz BBQ in Sandston, VA. It’s been a few years since we went through Sandston so this was new to us. So off we went for a late lunch – early dinner.
The Restaurant and Staff at Backwoodz BBQ:
Backwoodz BBQ is located in a small shopping strip, and they are right across from Richmond International Airport. When we went in we were immediately greeted by the young man working the counter. Unfortunately, I did not write his name down and I don’t remember it. He does deserve recognition though. He was very helpful with our menu choices, especially the sides. In addition, he was very friendly to talk to.

Backwoodz BBQ has a medium sized dining room. I believe they also have some DJ music at times. They seem to be set up for Blues style music. Everyone we talked to was extremely nice. We talked to the owner for a little while. The restaurant has been there for about 3 years. Like I said, we haven’t been through Sandston in a while.
Tammy’s Choices at Backwoodz BBQ:
Tammy ordered Backwoodz BBQ’s Chicken and Brisket Combo Dinner. Her sides were Mac & Cheese and Cucumber Tomato Salad. The mac & cheese was awesome. It tasted a lot like Tammy’s homemade mac & cheese. I didn’t try the cucumber tomato salad. That’s just not my thing. She loved it. Said it reminded her of her mom’s.
The brisket was very good. It had a nice smoke ring and smoke flavor. But the big surprise of the meal was the chicken. Yes, even I would have to agree. The chicken was awesome. That was some of the best tasting smoked chicken I’ve had in a long time.
My Choices at Backwoodz BBQ:
Today at Backwoodz BBQ I chose the Rib and Pulled Pork Combo Dinner. My sides were Baked Beans and Cabbage. The baked beans were good. Just a simple seasoning that made them blend well with my dinner. The cabbage was wonderful. It was seasoned just right and was an excellent choice.

The pulled pork was very good. The smoke and the seasoning blended well together, and the pork was moist and tender. I did have a few pieces of bark mixed in as well. The ribs were even better. I could have sat and ate a rack of them. The flavor was outstanding. I don’t think you can go wrong with any of our choices.
Final Thoughts on Backwoodz BBQ:
Tammy and I both enjoyed our visit to Backwoodz BBQ. Our meals were wonderful, and the service was exceptional. The food was great. I look forward to another trip through Sandston so we can stop in again. If you’re anywhere near the Richmond Airport or just traveling on I-295, stop in and check this place out. I think you’ll be glad you did.
