VA BBQ Restaurants

Wolfe’s BBQ Restaurant, Marion, VA

Wolfes BBQ Marion VA

We headed out to the mountains of Virginia to find Wolfe’s BBQ. After a morning and early afternoon of antiquing we went for a late lunch. Turns out we were very lucky today.

Where Is Wolfe’s BBQ?

Wolfe’s BBQ is located in downtown Marion, VA. They are in part of what appears to be the Historic District. They’re set up in one of the old buildings which has been restored quite nicely. They are very easy to find off of Interstate 81. And if it helps, as bad as GPS can be in the mountains, mine took us right to them.

The Restaurant and Staff:

Wolfe’s BBQ has an appealing outside appearance. As I said this is the old section of Marion. Inside the restaurant is very clean and set up quite nicely. They have a nice size dining room with both tables and booths. The hardwood floors really adds to the rustic look. I was happy as soon as we walked in. Their whole set up was appealing to a first time guest.

When we arrived we were greeted and told that they would be right with us. No problem there, it didn’t take long at all to get seated. Our waitress, Mel, turned out to be priceless. She made a great first impression. We loved her. She also turned out to be very helpful with our selections. We were also visited by the acting manager, Laura, several times during our visit. She too was very friendly and just a great person to talk with. We were really off to a great start.

What We Ate:

Well unfortunately they were out of brisket. This was a Sunday afternoon and Wolfe’s BBQ was only about an hour from closing. I guess good for them that they had a very busy lunch rush, just bad for us.

Ribs and Pork at Wolfe's BBQ

Three Ribs and Pulled Pork Plate with BBQ Beans and Fried Okra.

Not to panic though. I ordered the 3 Ribs and Pulled Pork Plate. For my sides I chose BBQ Beans and Fried Okra. The pork was excellent. It had a nice smoke flavor and smoke ring. I tried all of their sauces from the sweet to the vinegar and then the hot one. The hot sauce wasn’t too hot, just a little heat to spice it up. All of them were very good but once I tried them I continued to eat without any added sauce. Along with the smoke flavor the pork also had some bark from the outer layers mixed in. Really nice.

And the ribs…I have to give them their own line here because they were that good. They ran neck in neck with one of my favorite places back home. Tammy says they were better. I’d need to eat more to make that call. Sounds like another road trip. I’m in. Wolfe’s BBQ does a great job preparing their ribs. They are served without sauce. I think there should be a law against using sauce on these ribs. The dry rub and smoke were just as close to perfect as you can get. Tender and fall off the bone ribs don’t get any better. Awesome!

And the sides lived up to the rest of the meal. The bbq beans were prepared in a sweet bbq sauce, but not too sweet. They had a really good flavor. My only suggestion would be with the okra. While it was good, maybe a little Cajun spice would make it stand out from the crowds. Just a thought.

Tammy ordered the same plate but with Mac & Cheese and Collards. Both were homemade and very good. The mac & cheese had plenty of cheese and a great taste. The collards were well seasoned but I couldn’t nail down what they used. I’d prefer some type of ham/pork seasoning but that’s what I’m used to.

And finally as if we weren’t full enough, we both ordered dessert. Tammy had their Key Lime Pie and I had a piece of Heath Bar Cake. Both were homemade. Tammy says the

Key Lime Pie was wonderful. I’ll never know that one. I’m just not into Key Lime. My Heath Bar Cake was out of this world great. Very moist and just delicious. It just melted in my mouth.

Final Thoughts:

I guess you can tell that I’m the newest fan of Wolfe’s BBQ. They’re pretty easy to get to off of Interstate 81 in Marion, VA. I just fell in love with the building, the people, and the food. And Mel was super. They had already closed when we were getting ready to leave. Mel walked us to the door and we all talked about what a pleasure it was for us to be there. She then gave both of us a hug and wished us safe travels and be sure to come back. We do need to try the brisket after all. What more could I ask for? Maybe mail order? No, that wouldn’t be the same. If you’re traveling that direction you owe it to yourself to make that stop. You’ll be glad you did.

I have never had a bad experience there, whether when we ate in or had take out. We have had the pulled pork, cheese burger, catfish, fried shrimp, BLT wrap all good. my favorite sides are the potato salad, slaw, mac and cheese, corn bread and the hush puppies are the best you can get this far from the beach! The staff is always super!

Sounds like some great selections in addition to their bbq. Something for everyone. The staff impressed me also. Glad to hear that’s standard. Thanks for adding to the post.

Kathy, we thought Marion seemed like a great small town too. Wish we had more time to scout it out. We did catch one antique shop after our awesome meal. Always nice to walk some after that. Thank for the input. Great to see the comments come in.

I’m originally from Alabama and have visited family there all thru my life. The best catfish on earth can be had in Ala. Wolfes is second. I especially enjoy the Catfish Sand. with Whitetop sauce and jalapenos.
