TD's Smokehouse Barbecue

Today were taking Patrick’s BBQ Trail to TD’s Smokehouse Barbecue in Richmond, VA. After hitting up several local spots here at home I thought we should take a ride again for our next new spot. So I checked this spot out on line and it’s only about 1 hour and 40 minutes away. That’s not too far to go for dinner, right? Well I didn’t really factor in the trip back home. So off we went to see what we could find out.

Where is TD’s Smokehouse Barbecue Located?

TD’s Smokehouse Barbecue is located on Patterson Ave. in Richmond, VA. We came in from I-95 out of Petersburg and took Chippenham Pkwy. Of course I let GPS guide me in. No problems. They seem to be in a pretty good area, though I don’t know Richmond that well. Tammy’s brother usually tells us where to avoid but we didn’t consult him this time. I thought the area looked pretty nice to me.

The Restaurant and Staff:

Well, here’s the thing. TD’s Smokehouse Barbecue is a take-out restaurant. They have no inside dining room. There are a few picnic tables outside that you can eat at, which is what we did. There were two men working there and I thought both of them were very nice. One took our order and was very patient with us as we tried to figure out how to get the most to try. The other brought our food out to us. I also talked with the second gentleman when I went back in for a little chat about their business and introduce myself. There was one review I saw on line where a lady said the staff was very rude. Maybe someone else waited on her, I don’t know, but I don’t think the same men waited on her. These guys were very polite and friendly. You could also hear them in the kitchen preparing our order and both seemed to really enjoy themselves.

We also had the privilege of meeting a beautiful young lady celebrating her 70th birthday with her family. She chose TD’s Smokehouse Barbecue for her birthday dinner. She also assured us that anything we chose to order would be very good. Hard to go wrong with that endorsement.

Our Choices at TD’s Smokehouse Barbecue:

TD's Smokehouse Barbecue

Two Meat Dinner Plate. Pulled Pork and Brisket with Slaw and Mac & Cheese.

So let’s move on to our food choices. Tammy ordered a Two Meat Dinner Plate. She chose Pulled Pork and Brisket with Mac and Cheese and Slaw. The dinner plate was also served with a hamburger bun. I’ll start with the least favorite, the slaw. It wasn’t bad, it just seemed kind of plain. The slaw would probably be good on a sandwich. Now we got that behind us so we move on to the mac and cheese. It was excellent, rich and creamy with plenty of cheese flavor.

The pork had a really good flavor, served with some sweet tomato base sauce on it. They didn’t over sauce the pork so you’re still able to taste the flavor of the meat. The brisket was also good. It was served with the same sauce as the pork. I think the brisket would be better with less or no sauce on it. You could add your own as you like. That said, I’d order it again.

I ordered the same two meats with my dinner plate but went with Baked Beans and Seasoned Fries. The fries were regular ole French fries but they add a seasoning to make them much better. Now the beans

were really good. They were pork and beans and kidney beans combined with their own sauce. I would like the beans again. In addition to my regular order I noticed that they serve Jambalaya. The sign said you couldn’t beat it unless you traveled to New Orleans. Not exactly a quote by the way. Yes, I had to try it. Oh and yes it was delicious. I’d love to have some more of that even as I sit here writing.

Final Thoughts:

So my final thoughts on TD’s Smokehouse Barbecue would have to be that I liked them. Now this one is unique, since there is no eat-in dining room I probably wouldn’t rush over there for dinner. This is not the kind of place you go for that sit down bbq dining experience. I’d think of them more for lunch or if you live close by you can grab some diners to take home. As for travelers who are passing through or around Richmond, I probably wouldn’t recommend this for a dinner stop. Unless of course you’re looking to stretch your legs and maybe do a little tailgating. Remember there is no dining room. So there you go, mixed again. Good spot for lunch or for locals to get carryout, not so great for travelers to come over to. And that’s enough from me.
