Stormin’ Norman’s BBQ; Kenly, NC

February 2, 2016

We discovered Stormin’ Norman’s BBQ while traveling on I-95 in North Carolina. We had seen their sign on the interstate before but never stopped

there until this trip.

Where Is Stormin’ Norman’s BBQ Located?

Stormin’ Norman’s BBQ is located in “Friendly” Kenly, NC. I love that name. I’ve seen it all my life traveling between VA and SC but only stopped in Kenly a few times. Anyway, they are located just off I-95 at 404 South Church St. It’s really easy to get to them and back on the Interstate if you’re looking for a quick meal. Do be sure to check their hours. They are closed Mon. thru Wed.

What We Ate at Stormin’ Norman’s BBQ:

Stormin' Norman's BBQ, Pulled Pork with Brunswick Stew and Slaw.

Stormin’ Norman’s BBQ, Pulled Pork with Brunswick Stew and Slaw. Don’t forget the Hushpuppies.

I tried their Pork plate with Brunswick Stew and Slaw for my sides. Tammy went for their Fried Chicken with Brunswick Stew and Cabbage. Both plates came with hushpuppies.

The pork was chopped kind of fine but not to the minced state. It had a good NC Vinegar base with a nice smoke ring. Nothing fancy but pretty good. I’ll have to admit that the slaw was not my favorite although Tammy said she liked it. It was just chopped too fine for me. I also have grown to like a little vinegar taste in slaw. The Brunswick Stew was very good, probably my favorite at this stop. The hushpuppies were really good too.

Tammy really liked her fried chicken. I tried it and agreed that it was good. Her cabbage was very good.

After trying it I wished I had got it instead of the slaw. Maybe I’ll remember that next time.

The Restaurant and Staff:

Stormin’ Norman’s BBQ has a nice sized dining room. It seems to be well kept and was kept clean by the staff. No fancy décor, just plain and simple. When you place your order at the counter they fix your plate while you’re there, cafeteria style. At the other end you pay for your food and take it to a table. When you finish eating you just leave your dishes and someone will clean up the table. Everyone we talked to was very nice and helpful. Really a pleasant experience. I guess I should be reminded of the area, “Friendly Kenly”. I get it. Well they lived up to the name.

I liked our stop at Stormin’ Norman’s BBQ. I can’t say that they are my favorite bbq restaurant but I would not hesitate to send someone there. I also look forward to a return visit.

I’m from “Friendly Kenly” and have actually worked at Stormin’ Norman’s on multiple occasions while in undergraduate and graduate school. The owners are wonderful people with strong Christian values and are a delight to work for. The staff is friendly and very helpful toward customers, which is helpful with the interstate traffic that brings people from all over to this restaurant. No one is ever too busy to answer a question or help someone decide what they want. The regulars are just that, regulars. There are some people who come in every day the doors are open and get the same thing each time. Everyone from staff to customer is treated like family at Stormin’ Norman’s! It’s a great family owned and Christian operated business and a staple in our town!

I am from Friendly Kenly, even sang a song about it once in 8th grade. I worked at Stormin’ Norman’s Truckstop. I graduated with Stormin’ Norman’s son Jodie. I will say that if you go to their establishment, expect to be treated well. Although it has been several years since I have lived in Kenly, I do enjoy visiting Stormin’ Norman’s when I’m home. Thanks for your article. It brought a little bit of home to my day.

Ruth. Thanks to you also for your comments. I’ve been getting great feedback from the fans and now family of Stormin’ Normans. I did read a little about his family now running the business now when we were there. I do check their Facebook page once in a while and see that they do have Christian values and love to share with everyone. Thanks again for adding a little more to the story.
