VA BBQ Restaurants

Rocco’s Smokehouse Grill, Williamsburg, VA

February 20, 2016

Rocco’s Smokehouse Grill is a pretty nice restaurant in Williamsburg, VA. They may be a little too nice. Well they used to be an Italian Restaurant. Several years back they made the switch to BBQ. I’m just not real keen on cloth table cloths and napkins at a bbq joint, sorry. This last time we went they did have paper on top of the table cloths. I guess we’re just not neat enough with our ribs and sauces.

Anyways, we went back to Rocco’s Smokehouse recently to check them out one more time before writing a review. I do insist on being fair which means up to date.

Where Is Rocco’s Smokehouse?

As I said they are located in Williamsburg, VA on The Bypass Road. They are near the end closest to Colonial Williamsburg. There is also a Christmas store in the same building.

The Restaurant and Staff:

How do you feel about bears? There is a very large bear just inside the entrance to Rocco’s Smokehouse. Why? I don’t know but he’s pretty cool and the kids seem to love him. Anyway, the restaurant was very clean and they have a very nice staff. Everyone we’ve met working there has been friendly and very helpful. They do treat their customers well. Rocco’s Smokehouse Grill is a nice sit down restaurant. Go in, chill out and just relax. They have a fairly large dining area and a casual décor. As mentioned, I could live without the cloth table cloths. It is a nice restaurant. I like the train track that runs around the room above your head.

What We Ate at Rocco’s Smokehouse:

Rocco's Combo #2. Ribs, Brisket and Pulled Pork.

Rocco’s Combo #2. Ribs, Brisket and Pulled Pork.

So on this visit I ordered Rocco’s Combo #2. This came with Ribs, Brisket, and Pulled Pork. For my sides I chose the smoked beans and the fried okra.

The Pork was good but not great. It did have a nice smoke ring but not a lot of smoke flavor. It looked really good so I was expecting it to be better. So, on to the Brisket. The brisket had a good flavor but it was a little tough. It came with sauce on it. Still not hitting the great level I was hoping for.

Oh, but the ribs…The ribs were very good. They had a really good flavor and were served with sauce on them. The sauce did compliment their flavor. I liked the ribs, yea! My sides were good. The fried okra was good but nothing done to raise it to a higher level. Maybe a little spice or something just for a surprise to the taste buds. The beans were real good. They also had peppers and onions added to them. Now that was a nice touch.

Rocco's Combo #1. Brisket, Pulled Pork and Sausage instead of Chicken.

Tammy ordered Rocco’s Combo #1 which comes with Brisket, Pulled Pork, and Chicken. They let her substitute Sausage for the Chicken. Her sides were the smoked beans also and on our waiter’s recommendation she went for the corn on the cob. We already talked about the pork and brisket so on to the sausage. It was very good also. It wasn’t spicy but came with some spicy mustard on the side for dipping. For me, the spicy mustard raised the sausage to the next level. That was a good touch. According to her, our waiter did well with his corn recommendation. She really enjoyed it.

My Thoughts on Rocco’s Smokehouse:

For the most part it was a good meal. They do have room for improvement on their pork and brisket based on this visit. Nothing there is bad. You will get a good meal. Don’t let my comments on their pork and brisket stop you from trying them out. You may like them better or maybe you’ll catch them on a better day than I did.
