Old City Barbeque

Today we’re going to take a look at Old City Barbeque. Located on York St. in Williamsburg, VA. They were pretty easy for us to find coming over on the Jamestown Ferry. And they also seem to be fairly close to I-64 if you happen to be traveling. Put that GPS to work and let it guide you in. We had actually been waiting for this one to open. My niece sent me the article that said they would be coming soon and that just seems like a long time ago. Well we did wait a little while before going over there. And here’s what we found.

The Restaurant and Staff:

Old City Barbeque is a really nice place. They are brand new so everything is awesome clean and neatly decorated. The dining room has modern paintings hanging on the walls. They have old fashioned looking wood slat tables with tin chairs. All of which was clean and comfortable. When we arrived they were very busy. There were only two servers at the time. All the staff pitched in to help and they kept things moving smoothly. Everyone working remained calm and pleasant through it all. I was impressed, especially with a new establishment.

Kellie was our waitress. She was awesome. Just like a pro, she just took everything in stride and kept things moving. She also knew the menu very well and was able to make recommendations to us. As busy as they were, Kellie was still able to find the time to talk with us and make us feel welcome. Thank you and great job!

Our Sides at Old City Barbeque:

Fries and Slaw at Old City Barbeque.

So now let’s get into our choices at Old City Barbeque. Of course I had to start out with their Brunswick Stew. It was simply awesome. The stew was nice and thick, full of meat and large chunks of potatoes along with corn, butter beans, and okra. I loved it.

Well tonight we tried something different. Tammy and I decided to share a Smoked Meat Sampler. This comes with Pulled Pork, Pork Belly, Pulled Chicken, Prime Brisket and St. Louis or Baby Back Ribs. Also included are two sides of your choice. We added two more sides so here’s what we had, Slaw, Fries, Baked Beans and Mac & Cheese. Kellie also brought us some cornbread while we waited.

Here’s the rundown on our sides. The slaw was very good. It did have a slight pepper bite, but not too much. Fries were good also. They had a crispy coating to them. The baked beans also hit right up there. They had some type of beer cooked into them. Lastly was the mac & cheese, also very good. It was nice and creamy with mild peppers cooked into it. I really enjoyed all the sides. On another visit if I had to choose two, I probably would go with the beans and mac & cheese unless there is something else that I missed on this visit. I don’t think you’ll go wrong with any of them.

The Meats:

Smoked Meat Sampler, Old City Barbeque.

Now let’s take a look at the meats on the Smoked Meat Sampler at Old City Barbeque.

Let me just start with the Pork Belly. This was my first experience with pork belly. It was OK but I’ll have to admit that it did not thrill me. Others may find it to be great, it just was not for me. And like I said this was my first time trying it. Sorry guys.

Now I can roll through the rest of our selections. Simply put we move into some fantastic selections from here. The pulled pork was very good. It had a good smoke flavor and some nice bark mixed into it. Very good choice. Then came the ribs. They were simply excellent. With some good smoke flavor to them it seemed as if they may have been finished off on a grill to get the nice charred outer layer on them. The ribs rocked. Next was the pulled chicken. Now most readers know that chicken is not my favorite but this was pretty good. Nice smoke and some excellent seasoning on it. If you’re a chicken fan I’m sure you’ll really go for this. Finally there was the brisket. It was excellent, also having a good smoke flavor and a really nice smoke ring too.

Summing it all up. It’s all good. These guys are doing an excellent job on the smokers. We took a peek out back when we left and there were several smokers back there still going. The smoked meats have a wonderful flavor and the seasonings and rubs are great with them.

Desserts:

Chocolate Pie for Dessert.

Well yes we did try a couple of desserts. Tammy went for Chocolate Pie. It was killer. Her pie was like chocolate fudge with whipped cream on top. Awesome! I went for the Chocolate Brownie with Ice Cream and Nuts. Made with dark chocolate, it was also very good.

Final Thoughts:

Now’s the time for me to try to sum up all my thoughts about Old City Barbeque. Tammy and I both really enjoyed this stop on the trail. Our waitress, Kellie, was wonderful. Everyone running to keep up with orders were very friendly. The food was awesome. Looking at their website I see that this place is run by three guys. Two of them are chefs and one is the pitmaster.

Think about that and it’s not too hard to figure out why the food is so good. I look forward to going back and also meeting some of the others working there. You guys are doing a great job and I wish you much success!

We are serious regulars – one chef/owner is our son; another is our nephew, and the pitmaster/owner we have known since he was a little guy. Needless to say, we are very proud of OCBB and love their food. A few pointers for newcomers – the pork belly bites are out of this world and their brisket french dip sandwich is just heavenly! Be sure to check the special board as not all choices are on the menu. The staff is always welcoming and efficient. Thank you for your article and support of Old City Barbeque – voted the Best New Restaurant in the City of Williamsburg

Cheri, just wanted to let you know we went back to Old City tonight. Tammy ordered the brisket sandwich with the dipping sauce. You are 100% right about how good it is. It was awesome. Thanks.

I would fit into the “regular” category. These guys and their crew always do a great job. Everything I have eaten there has been excellent! One of my favorites is the smoked wings with the Tidewater sauce – that alone is worth the trip. Keep on smoking guys, you’re doing a grest job!
