The Boss Hog Sandwich. Pulled Pork, Brisket, Grilled Onions & Peppers with Provolone Cheese.

I need to add an update to this post. We had lunch at Mason’s Grill & Smokehouse again today. I tried The Boss Hog sandwich and French Fries of course. This sandwich is awesome! It has pulled pork, brisket, grilled onions & peppers and provolone cheese on a killer bun. I had the waiter bring the sauces on the side and was going to try some on the sandwich but never got around to it. This is a must try. Try it without sauce first then add if you want to. Right now they are serving some of the best brisket in the area. We also were able to meet the chef today. She is terrific. Extremely nice and quite humble. Just a pleasure to meet. So with all that said I’ll repeat…The Boss Hog is a must try. You’ll be glad you did.

We have another new find, Mason’s Grill & Smokehouse in Suffolk. Tammy gets the credit for this one. She did an internet search and found them in our own backyard. Call me a coward but I passed on going there on a Friday night. Turns out that was a good choice for me. I’ll explain as I go.

Where Is Mason’s Grill & Smokehouse?

Mason’s Grill & Smokehouse is located just off of Route 10 down the road from Obici Hospital. Their address is 148 Burnetts Way Suite 112 in Suffolk, VA. They are also very convenient for jumping off of Highway 58 if traveling.

The Restaurant and Staff:

Ok, here’s the deal. Mason’s Grill & Smokehouse is also a bar. The owner tells us that they have a pretty good nightlife. So my choice to avoid Friday night was a good one. I want to concentrate on the restaurant side of the business. But just so you’re not surprised, they have a couple pool tables there also.

We felt welcomed as soon as we walked in the door. The whole restaurant was very clean and well kept. Even though we’re not into going to bars, they were very inviting and friendly. And I will go ahead and say that we will go back. You just have to pick your time accordingly.

This location has been through a few different owners. Jeremy, the current owner, is doing a nice job with the place. We really liked the lights over the bar which used Mason Jars as covers. The lights over the booths used small buckets for shades. Those were cool.

Our waitress was very nice. Even though she had not worked there long, she knew the food and was able to offer suggestions and answer questions. She was friendly and helpful during the whole visit.

We also met Jeremy, the owner. He was a very nice guy. He was very honest about the business and how he wasn’t pushing the restaurant side until he felt they were serving great food all the time. He has a very good chef whom we did not meet but Jeremy is interested in building a better staff for his food. Don’t let that stop you. So this is probably the longest description I’ve given for any of the restaurants to date. But we liked Jeremy from the start and I hope he does well with the food side. I think he’s off to a good start.

What We Ate at Mason’s Grill & Smokehouse:

Pulled Pork with Baked Beans and Fries.

Pulled Pork with Baked Beans and Fries.

Finally the food, right? Yes. I ordered the Pulled Pork Plate with Fries and Baked Beans. The pork was

good. I would like a little more smoke flavor even though you could see a nice smoke ring. They have six different sauces at Mason’s Grill & Smokehouse. Each sauce is named after an area of Suffolk. Some have a pretty good kick to them and some are mild. Read the ingredients and sample a small amount first. My

favorite was the Holland, Tammy’s was the Whaleyville. The Holland has a little kick to it but not a lot and a tomato base. The Whaleyville is more of a NC Vinegar sauce. The baked beans were good as well. They were sweet though. I might would cut back on the sweet in them just a little. But they have a good flavor. I loved my fries. I don’t know how they do it but the fries almost seem to have a slight crust to them. I just kept going back to them without even thinking about it. They were that good.

Tammy ordered a Brisket Sandwich with Sweet Potato Waffle Fries. It also came with a small cup of slaw. The sandwich also has cooked onions and melted cheddar cheese on it. If you think that sounds good you need to taste it. The brisket is excellent and everything pilled on that sandwich just tasted awesome. Kudos to Jeremy and the chef. You can also order a Brisket Plate if you don’t want the sandwich. I’d try it without sauce for starters. Our waitress also brought a little cup of a caramel dipping sauce for the waffle fries. That too was killer. I did prefer my fries over the waffle fries although Tammy disagrees with me on the fries. I tried the slaw and thought it was pretty good as well.

My Closing Thoughts:

We really enjoyed Mason’s Grill & Smokehouse. I hope they get to the desired level they’re looking for with the restaurant. I wouldn’t go here to eat at night, nothing personal folks but that’s not my thing. However, I would run in and pick up a “to go” order. We went for lunch on a Saturday and loved it. If you don’t want the bar you can also call your order in so you don’t have a long wait when you go pick it up.

Go check this place out and give them a chance.

MY 20 YEAR OLD GRANDSON AND I WENT TO MASON’S ON A WEEK NIGHT THIS MONTH AROUND 5:00. WE DID NOT KNOW IT WAS SO MUCH MORE OF A BAR THAN A RESTAURANT. WE BOTH ORDERED THE HAMBURGER STEAK AND GRAVY WHICH WAS SMALL BUT GOOD. THE SWEET POTATO TOTS WERE AWESOME. THE BIG PROBLEM WE HAD WAS THE SERVICE. IT WAS SLOW AND THE WAIT STAFF WAS NOT FRIENDLY. WE WAITED 10 MINUTES BEFORE THEY TOOK OUR DRINK ORDER AND ANOTHER 10 MINUTES BEFORE THEY BROUGHT THE DRINKS AND CAME BACK TO TAKE OUR ORDER. IT SEEMED TO TAKE FOREVER TO GET THE FOOD. WHEN IT WAS BROUGHT TO THE TABLE MY GRANDSON ASKED FOR ANOTHER GLASS OF TEA, WHICH HE NEVER GOT. WE WERE IGNORED THE REST OF THE TIME WE WERE THERE AND I HAD A HARD TIME GETTING OUR BILL AND PAYING. THERE WERE SEVERAL OTHER TABLE OF CUSTOMERS WHO WAITED LONG PERIODS FOR SERVICE. HOPEFULLY THE SERVICE WILL GET BETTER BECAUSE IT SEEMS LIKE THE FOOD IS PRETTY GOOD.

I’m sorry to hear about your service. Our waitress was outstanding. I don’t know if you talked to anyone while you were there but they would probably like to know if something is not good. Thanks for telling us about your visit. I’m glad you liked the food.

I visit Mason’s a lot, and I love the daily specials always something new and exciting to choose from. I especially love the wings if you like spicy you should order the Carolina Ripper… They are amazing. Unlike you I love Friday and Saturday nights there, wait staff and bar tenders are Awesome, but Chef Black is AMAZING…
