Hursey’s Bar-B-Q Graham, NC

We found Hursey’s Bar-B-Q on our recent trip to Burlington, NC. We managed to hit Durham during their 5:00 rush hour on I-85 and basically came to a standstill. Once we made it out of there we decided to find some supper before going on into Burlington. So we made our stop in Graham, NC.

Where’s Hursey’s Bar-B-Q Located?

As I said, the location we stopped at was in Graham, NC. Right off of I-85/I-40. Take Exit 147 onto S. Main St. (Route 87). They aren’t very far from the Interstate. Coming from that direction they will be located on your left. They have a pretty good sized sign at the road so they aren’t hard to find. Also just to be safe, I’ve become a big fan of my phone’s GPS Navigator. Worked like a charm.

When we first walked into Hursey’s Bar-B-Q we noticed the decorations in the lobby. Very nice with pictures of several famous people that have visited there and some that maybe I should have known. After all, they did have their picture on the wall. My two favorites were one of President George W. Bush and one of a rodeo dude. I didn’t know him but people that do that type of work impress me. There were also some antique decorations adding to the appeal. Once we walked in we were greeted and seated. We were a little early for the diner rush so we were able to pick the table of our choice. They have a nice size dining room with tables and booths and there is another dining room off to the side with more tables. There was a group of 10 – 12 people in there when we arrived so we stayed to the main room.

Our waitress was very friendly and very helpful. We told her that we were traveling and this was the first time we had been there. She helped us out with descriptions of how their food was prepared. She knew her stuff and helped us out a lot.

Our Choices at Hursey’s Bar-B-Q:

Hursey's Bar-B-Q

#4 Combo Plate with Ribs, Pork, and Chicken.

So now for the food.

I chose the #4 Combo Plate which included Chopped Pork, Chicken, and Ribs. My sides were Fries and Baked Beans. The plate also came with Hushpuppies. And I also ordered a side of Brunswick Stew for an appetizer.

I’ll start with the Brunswick Stew. It was pretty good. It had a tomato base with plenty of meat and veggies in it. A very nice starter. Both the fries and the baked beans were good also. Nothing really special done to the fries just good fries. The beans also had a good flavor, but nothing really standout special. And the hushpuppies were really good.

For the meats I’ll start with the ribs. They were my least favorite. They just seemed like ribs that were cooked with sauce in a slow cooker or in the oven. I’m not sure. They didn’t have a smoke flavor mixed in with the sauce. I did tell the manager this when we talked after our dinner. To their credit though, they were fall off the bone tender. I don’t think I’d order them again though.

The bbq was finely chopped. It was a good basic NC style bbq. The Q had a little smoke and a little vinegar taste, very moist and pretty good. I tried it with and without sauce. It was good either way.

#2 Combo Plate with Pork and Brunswick Stew.

Now the chicken was awesome. I know that this is unusual for me to say, so take it to heart when I do. Hursey’s Bar-B-Q calls it Broasted, I just call it fantastic. I actually ordered this with the intent of sharing with Tammy but I had a hard time going thru with it. I was counting on the Brunswick Stew being really good and trading off some chicken for some of her stew. Well we did work it out.

Tammy ordered a #2 Combo Plate. Hers came with Chopped Pork and Brunswick Stew. She had Cole Slaw and Mac & Cheese for her sides. As I said we did work out a trade for some of her bbq and Brunswick Stew for some of my chicken. Her mac & cheese was good. It was moist and pretty tasty. The slaw was mayo base and a little juicy. It did have a good taste to it though.

Final Thoughts:

Well here’s how I’d sum up our visit to Hursey’s Bar-B-Q. I really think that they are a well-established old family run business. They cook their bbq by old family traditions and recipes and run a nice family restaurant. Everyone there was as friendly as they could be. Even the other guests were friendly to us. We really enjoyed our meal and our visit here. To me it was a refreshing change of taste for the night. No doubt I’ll be out tomorrow looking for the smoky pulled pork but that’s another story. I have no problem recommending Hursey’s Bar-B-Q as a stop on our BBQ Trail. Coming off the Interstate and being able to relax was a plus. Add in a good meal and it’s a really nice stop.
