Hillbilly Red's BBQ

We recently went on a search for Hillbilly Red’s BBQ. We had read several reviews about them and most were pretty good so we were wondering why we had never went that direction before. Well we hit them up the other day and here’s how it went.

Where’s Hillbilly Red’s BBQ Located?

Hillbilly Red’s BBQ is located on Route 60, Williamsburg Rd. in Sandston, VA. A very easy shot from Richmond International Airport. For some reason I let the GPS take me there and we came in off of I-295. No way can I explain that one. Travelers up there will have to let the GPS guide you. I’d prefer the nice ride up Route 60 from the Williamsburg area. Either way will work.

We actually rode pass Hillbilly Red’s BBQ at first. They looked closed, so we pulled over and called them to be sure. Yes they’re open. We went back to

check them out. The restaurant is very nice. I loved the building and the decorations. They are decorated with an old fashioned appeal. Very nice and very clean.

When we entered we were greeted by a lady working the counter and taking orders. We asked a few questions about the menu and then ordered our meals. She told us to have a seat and she’d bring it to us. So far a really nice experience.

Our Choices at Hillbilly Red’s BBQ:

Brisket Plate with an Order of BBQ added. Sides are Slaw and Baked Beans.

The first thing I noticed about the menu was that there are no combo plates or platters available. I really like to sample several different meats on my first visit. Even when we go back to a restaurant for more visits, I rarely order only one meat. So I thought this was a little odd but I worked with it.

I ordered a Brisket Plate with Slaw and Baked Beans. I added BBQ to my order for $4 extra.

I’d have to admit that the pork was a little bit of a letdown. It was not bad but judging from the pictures I had seen on line I had really high expectations for the smoke flavor. There are some very nice pictures on line. It did have a pretty good smoke ring but the flavor wasn’t there for me. I think this may have been a fluke. Based on other reviews that I read and their brisket I’m thinking that we may have just hit them at a less than excellent time. I know that does happen at times. For any restaurant’s sake I always hope that time does not occur when someone is going to write about their experience. But like I said, it was good just not as good as I had anticipated.

The brisket was very good. It had a good smoke ring and smoke flavor. As good as the brisket was made me wonder even more about the bbq. Maybe the bbq just got pulled too soon. Never the less, I’d get the brisket again no questions asked.

For me the baked beans were ok but a little too sweet. The slaw was pretty good too. It was also a little sweet but not overdone. The plates also come with hushpuppies which were good also. Only problem with the hushpuppies was that we only got 2 each. They weren’t extra-large ones so I think there should be one or two more there.

Tammy ordered the same meats. The only difference with her plate was she got Mac & Cheese with hers. The mac & cheese was good, just not great. It did make a pretty good side selection to round out her order.

Final Thoughts:

All in all this was a good visit. I think that Hillbilly Red’s BBQ could be even better than it is. I’d also get rid of the sign limiting refills at the drink machine. If I drop $50 for my meal don’t limit my drinks. I don’t know if the community has been hit hard by the economy or not. But there is Richmond International Airport just a few blocks away. Could be worth looking into some advertising there. Just a thought. We did enjoy talking with the folks that run/own Hillbilly Red’s BBQ. I truly wish them the best. Bounce back from the whipping that the economy gave you and put your heart into serving some great food. I believe that it can be done and that this restaurant should do well.

Ok so there you have my point of view. I hope I don’t come off sounding like I don’t like this place. That is not the case, I think they were good. I’d love to see the place packed next time we pass thru and visit.
