The Galax Smokehouse

Well we made another trip to The Galax Smokehouse just for some dinner and pictures. Well sort of. We went there before I started the blog so I didn’t have any pictures. That seemed like a good enough excuse to make a return visit.

Just a little extra information on Galax.

They will be hosting the Smoke on the Mountain BBQ Competition in July of 2016. National competitors will be there for a chance to move on to the Kansas City Nationals. Check it out at www.smokeonthemountainva.com.

In August 2016 they will host the 81st Old Fiddlers Convention. Sounds like some great mountain music and fun for the entire family. You can get more info at http://oldfiddlersconvention.com.

Where Is The Galax Smokehouse?

They are located on North Main Street in Galax, VA. Their location is very convenient for anyone traveling west on Rt. 58 beyond Hillsville, VA. It’s also close enough to Hillsville that anyone visiting there could make the run to Galax. You Hillsville Flea Market visitors should keep this in mind. It would be worth the time you take if you exit off of I-77 and take the relaxing ride there for lunch or dinner.

The Restaurant and Staff:

One of the really fun parts of doing this blog is having the opportunity to meet some great people that you probably wouldn’t meet otherwise. And to be able to find a killer restaurant in the process, that’s just icing on the cake. We found both at The Galax Smokehouse. Their restaurant is fairly good sized. We were there at lunchtime once. It was pretty crowded but we didn’t have to wait for a table. This trip we caught them between lunch and dinner. There were plenty of tables available.

I’m sticking with this visit for the remainder of the review. The dining room was very clean and I already said there were plenty of tables. We were greeted as soon as we came in and then seated at the table of our choice. Our waitress was exceptional. She was quite helpful with the menu selections and helping Tammy pick out the right choice for her. We actually had a couple waitresses check on us while we were there. It didn’t really matter who waited on you, they all worked together to make sure all the guests were taken care of. And I might add, they all worked very well together.

What We Ate at The Galax Smokehouse:

Three Meat Platter with Fried Potatoes and BBQ Beans

Three Meat Platter with Fried Potatoes and BBQ Beans

While Tammy needed some help deciding what to order, I dove right into a 3 meat platter with Pulled Pork, Sliced Brisket, and Rib Tips. For my sides I chose their Fried Potatoes and BBQ Beans. Oh yeah, and for an appetizer I had a cup of Brunswick Stew. Yes my hands were full but I knew that I could do it, at least I thought I could.

Starting with the Brunswick Stew, I love it. The Galax Smokehouse is where I was taught to add a little hot

sauce to it for some kick. This time I added a little of their hot bbq sauce. It was awesome. There was plenty of meat and veggies in it with an excellent sauce/stew base.

Moving on to the rest of my meal. The rib tips had a great flavor and were served with sweet sauce on them. However, moving on to the brisket things got even better. It was thin sliced, lean and had a wonderful flavor from the smoker. It was served without sauce. You can add sauce at the table if you like. Then there was the pulled pork. It was killer and was the finale that did me in with this meal. It had excellent smoke flavor with some bark mixed in as well. Some very nice chunks and is served without sauce also.

My sides rated right up there with the rest of the meal. The fried potatoes were sliced a little thicker that a potato chip and were really good. The bbq beans were wonderful as well. They had a great blend of smoke and seasoning. Yes, I loved them. And to add insult to injury my platter came with hush puppies and corn nuggets. Both of which are sure to please. I thought they would have to wheel me out of there.

Tammy used a little better judgment than I. She actually ordered off the appetizer menu. Hers came with 2 meats, 2 sides, 2 hush puppies, and 2 corn nuggets. See how this works? You can also order in 3’s or 4’s. She had the Pulled Pork and Sliced Brisket also. Her sides were Fried Potatoes and Slaw. I did try her slaw

and it was pretty good. It has a mayo base. We happened to be here around Tammy’s birthday so they gave her a bowl of banana pudding. They brought 2 spoons but one of them disappeared pretty quickly. She did let me get one little taste and it was awesome. This was some of the best banana pudding I’ve tasted in a long time. I would have loved to have some more but there was just no way it would fit. I was already miserable.

Final Thoughts:

Yes I’m a fan of The Galax Smokehouse also. I tell you, this is one of the awesome benefits of this blog. There is some great bbq out there, you just have to go find it. Or, you can wait for me to find it and tell you about it. And yes, we do run across a not so good or even bad one here and there. That is not the case here. Everything was fantastic, the people, the restaurant, the town, and the food. I look forward to a return visit. I’d love to be there in July for the Smoke on the Mountain BBQ Competition. We’ll just have to see.

Ate there 3 years ago, some of the best BBQ on a 10 day 3800 mile bike trip from Upstate NY to New Orleans and back. We mapped out food stops and this one was at the top. Southern Living magazine voted them best banana pudding in the South and I would not disagree, Glad to see the food quality and service is still top notch.. The Rex Theater around the corner did a live Bluegrass radio show on Friday.

Great to hear someone else maps out food stops too. Galax seems to be a great little town. I’d like to get back just to walk around and check them out. And eat at the Smokehouse again. Have safe travels and enjoy the ride.
