Extra Billy's Barbecue

Recently we made a visit to Extra Billy’s Barbecue in Richmond, VA. We actually just went up there to visit and I had planned to return to one of the restaurants that I’ve already posted about. Well, Tammy and Barbie decided that I needed to try a new place so the hunt began. After checking out several different places on line we decided to give Extra Billy’s Barbecue a try.

Where’s Extra Billy’s Barbecue Located?

Extra Billy’s Barbecue has two locations. We chose the Midlothian location. That whole area is Richmond to me but the address is actually in Midlothian, VA. They are just off of Midlothian Turnpike on Alverser Dr. They aren’t hard to find.

The Restaurant and Staff:

Extra Billy's Barbecue

A small section of Extra Billy’s Barbecue Dining Room.

Located in a brewery, the restaurant is quite large. They have a very large dining room with a casual décor. They have a mix-match variety of decorations including old signs, crocks, some nautical, etc. It’s just a pretty cool mix. As noted Extra Billy’s Barbecue has its own brewery. They do have a good sized bar located in there also but it is off to the side of the dining room.

Everyone we met here was very nice. They had a hostess to greet us and seat us. Our waitress was super. She was just as friendly as possible and very helpful with the menu.

Extra Billy’s Barbecue is named in honor of twice elected Governor of Virginia, William Smith of the mid-1800’s. He earned the nickname Extra Billy because of all the extra effort he put into anything he did. Extra Billy’s Barbecue has pledged the same efforts with their restaurant, to make the extra effort and take the extra time for everything they do for their customers.

Our Choices at Extra Billy’s Barbecue:

Extra Billy's Barbecue 3 Meat Sampler.

Three Meat Sampler Platter with Pork, Sliced Brisket, and Smoked Sausage.

I went for the Three Meat Sampler Platter with Pulled Pork, Sliced Brisket, and Smoked Sausage. My sides were Baked Beans and Fries.

I’ll start with my sides. Both the baked beans and the fries were very good. The beans had a thick tasty sauce. The fries were actually wedges. They seemed to have some type of dry rub or other seasoning on them which made them really good.

Now the meats. The pulled pork had a nice smoke ring and a good smoke flavor. I tried two sauces on it. I liked the red sauce the best but the truth is the pulled pork was best with no sauce on it.

The brisket was sliced thin. It also had a good smoke ring and very good flavor. I did not even try any sauce on the brisket, it was that good.

My third choice at Extra Billy’s Barbecue was the smoked sausage. They have a good sausage, nothing fancy and not spicy. They do give you some spicy mustard for dipping which I really enjoyed. This wraps up my choices but not my samplings from Tammy so here goes hers.

Extra Billy's Barbecue Ribs Plus One

Ribs Plus One Platter with Sliced Brisket.

Tammy ordered the Rib Combo which was ribs plus one. The plus one she chose was the Sliced Brisket. Her sides were Collards and Potato Salad.

The collards were good. They were well seasoned and tender. The potato salad was mayo and maybe sour cream based. She really liked it but I don’t like sour cream so it didn’t thrill me. Moral of the story, if you like sour cream, try it.

Uncle Billy’s Barbecue has some excellent ribs. They had nice smoke flavor plus a sauce basted on them. They really have a nice blend. All the flavors complimented each other. Nice!

And A Little Extra:

Smoked Chicken with Green Beans and Mac & Cheese

Smoked Chicken with Green Beans and Mac & Cheese

On this visit we were fortunate enough to have Barbie come with us. She not being a huge bbq fan (we still love her anyways) ordered the Smoked Chicken. Her sides were Green Beans and Mac & Cheese. No I did not reach over to her plate with my fork, I just asked what she thought. So here’s Barbie’s take on her order.

She loved her chicken. It had a very good smoke flavor. Also it was moist and tender. Green beans were good. The mac & cheese was really good. Tasted homemade.

Dessert Anyone?

Well to top all of this off Tammy and I ordered dessert. Barbie thought we had lost out minds so she passed on it.

Extra Billy's Barbecue Desserts

Chocolate Almond Pie and Apple Cobbler with Vanilla Ice Cream.

Tammy got a Chocolate Almond Pie. It was light and fluffy and good but not what she was looking for. It just wasn’t chocolate enough for her.

I had their Apple Cobbler with Vanilla Ice Cream. Mine was good. It was more like a small apple pie in a bowl. The flavor was enhanced with a slight cinnamon taste.

Final Thoughts:

You know, I think Extra Billy’s Barbecue turned into a good stop on our BBQ Trail. A car show was being set up in the parking lot when we were leaving. Had it not been 104 degrees outside we may have stayed a little longer.

Some places we go to just have a real nice feel to them and this was one of them. Even though they are not the small family restaurant, they seem to hold the same values which is nice. We will go back here and I believe Barbie will want a ride when we do. My guess is that she probably will not wait for our return visit.
