Today the trail heads west again to visit Due South BBQ in Christiansburg, VA. This is actually a little over half way to my sister’s home in West Virginia so it’s a good location for us. They’re also very close to the Virginia Tech Campuses in Blacksburg. For anyone paying a visit to the college this is a nice stop. We had a couple students from VT let us know about the place and recommended it to us. Also if you’re traveling on I-81 they’re not far off the interstate. You’ll need to take the 460 West exit and then get on 460 West Business. Their actual address is on Roanoke St. They’re fairly easy to find.

The Restaurant and Staff:

Due South BBQ has an average size dining room. They may also have outside seating though we didn’t check that out closely. Maybe in the spring. The outside of the restaurant had a beachy look to me. I guess it was the colors. Whatever it was I liked it. The inside was decorated with pig pictures and their t-shirts which were for sale. The dining area was very nice and it was kept clean. The young people working here were doing a good job.

We were greeted as soon as we came in the door. A young man gave us menus to look at and told us to come up to the counter when we were ready to order. We took ours to a table to look over them. Once we knew what we wanted we went up to the counter. There he answered any questions we had and helped us make our final decisions.

My Choices at Due South BBQ:

Combo Plate with Pulled Pork and Ribs
Due South BBQ

Tonight I went with a Combo Plate with Pulled Pork and a Half Rack of Ribs. This plate came with Hushpuppies and 1 side. With the suggestion from the young man taking our order, I went with the smoked potatoes. I also added a side of Fried Okra to go with it. Let’s start with my sides. The fried okra was good. I’d like to see them add a little seasoning to them after cooking such as some dry rub, Old Bay, Cajun, or something else just to spruce it up. The smoked potatoes were killer. They were boiled red potatoes with pork drippings added. Yes I thanked him for telling me about these when I ordered. The hushpuppies were very good too.

The pork was good, not heavy on the smoke flavor but still good. It’s served without sauce. The Ribs came with a Lexington Sauce on them. They were good also and had some nice charred meat on them too. I’d like them better without the sauce. To me the vinegar was a little overpowering. Don’t take this wrong, these ribs were good! Pulled right off the bone, nice and tender too.

Trough Dinner Plate with Brisket.

Tammy ordered the Trough Dinner Plate with Beef Brisket. This comes as a jumbo sandwich, Tammy passed on the bun and had it just as a plate. It also comes with Hushpuppies and she gets 2 sides with hers. She chose Fried Green Tomatoes and Mac & Cheese. The brisket was pulled. It had a very good smoke flavor and some nice bark around the outside.

The fried green tomatoes were excellent. Where do you find green tomatoes on the 22 of December with that much flavor? The flavor just burst in your mouth when you bit into them. Fried perfectly, nice golden brown and crispy crust on the outside. The mac & cheese was very good too. It was nice and creamy with plenty of cheese.

Sauces:

Between the pork and the brisket I tried all of their sauces except the Mustard Sauce. I don’t like mustard on my pork or brisket. Tammy did try it but didn’t care for it too much. Her back up is the sweet sauce. The Sweet Brown, Sweet Red, and Lexington Sauces were all good. My favorite here was the Hot Red Sauce. For me it had just enough heat to make it good. I liked it on the pork and the brisket.

Final Thoughts:

On top of everything else they had live music the night we were there. It was just one man and a guitar. He was just getting started when we were leaving but was doing a nice job with an Allman Brothers’ song and some Christmas songs. Our VT Kids like this place and recommended it. So I’m sold too. I enjoyed this stop and can see us stopping there again when we head that direction. That’s one reason I enjoy traveling Highway 460, there are just so many places to see along the way.

    Been here probably a dozen times and it has never disappointed. Have to agree with most of your comments. Not a fan of their potato salad, but really enjoy their baked beans. Sweet red and vinegar are our two favorite sauces. Always pleasant service, even when they’re packed.

    You have to try the sweet tater casserole and the best sauce for the pulled pork is the lexington sauce mixed with the sweet red to sweeten it slightly. Haven’t ate the pork any other way since I mixed the two. My gf gets the half chicken and does her sauce sweet red with a little bit of lexington sauce mixed in. I’m glad I only live 30min away.
