Dorothy's BBQ Smokehouse

Dorothy’s BBQ Smokehouse is another of our new local finds along the BBQ Trail. We’ve been fortunate lately to find several new, or new to us, places to try out. So take a ride with us over to Norfolk and see what you think.

Where is Dorothy’s BBQ Smokehouse Located?

Dorothy’s BBQ Smokehouse is located on Colley Ave. in Norfolk, VA. They are only a couple of blocks from the Ted Constant Convocation Center and Old Dominion University. They are on the corner of Colley Ave and 42nd St. Not a hard one to find. They’d probably be even easier to find if the weekend work closures at the Mid-Town Tunnel ever finish. Time will tell.

The Restaurant and Staff:

As soon as we walked into Dorothy’s BBQ Smokehouse we were greeted by a very nice young man named Jermaine. I hope I have the spelling right. He told us we could sit wherever we want and he would be with us to take our order. Jermaine was very friendly and just a very nice person. And he walked us through the menu and answered all of our questions. Just a footnote about Jermaine: A pitmaster from another restaurant recommended Dorothy’s for us to try. When we talked to him about our visit he knew who we were talking about. Jermaine had waited on him when he visited also and he felt the same way about him. Very nice young man. Jermaine also checked on us quite often to be sure everything was ok, before and after our food arrived. He was very attentive to all his customers.

The dining room is probably a little smaller than average. They can still fit quite a few people in there. There are a few tables at one end and picnic tables in the remainder. The place is decorated very nice. I loved the tin and wood look and they have a beautiful bar. Everything was nice and clean. It has a homey feel to it. We were very comfortable there.

Our Choices at Dorothy’s BBQ Smokehouse:

Brisket Plate with Collards and Sweet Potato Loaf.

So let’s talk about the food at Dorothy’s BBQ Smokehouse. Tammy ordered the Brisket Plate with Collards and a Sweet Potato Loaf. The plate also comes with Slaw and a Roll. Starting with her sides, the collards were very good, well-seasoned Southern Style. The sweet potato loaf was like a small loaf of bread. In addition to the sweet potato mixture it had sugar and cinnamon on top. It was different and also pretty good. The slaw was chopped and had a sweet mayo base. It wasn’t too sweet and the mayo didn’t overpower. Tammy loved the roll that came with the plate. Later in the meal I was actually able to trade her part of my roll for some brisket. Not a bad deal, for me.

The brisket had a very good flavor. Excellent smoke flavor and a nice smoke ring. It was served with just a touch of sauce on it. You can add more if you want to. I don’t think it’s necessary. The brisket is chopped and even though we prefer sliced it was top notch. Don’t let chopped stop you from trying it.

Pork Plate with Baked Beans and Mac & Cheese.

I ordered the Pork Plate with Mac & Cheese and Baked Beans. It too was served with a roll and the slaw. The mac & cheese was very good. It was creamy, cheesy and had a unique flavor mixed into it as well. We were told that one ingredient may have been garlic, but the other would remain a secret. We thought maybe a little of their dry rub but I’m not sure on that. Whatever they added to it really works well. The beans were also really good. They had lots of meat cooked in with them and a good sauce.

The pork was very good as well. It too was chopped but not to the point of being too fine. It had a really good smoke flavor, a nice smoke ring, and some really good bark mixed in too. Again don’t let chopped stop you if you prefer a different style.

Desserts:

Well both of us were pretty full after our meals. We did however decide to share a piece of Carrot Cake. Bad move. Not the cake, it was awesome. The sharing part was a bad idea. Even if you have to take some home with you it’s much safer to order your own and well worth it.

Final Thoughts:

You know, we really enjoyed ourselves at Dorothy’s BBQ Smokehouse. Everyone was very nice and the food was really good too. Not much more to ask for. My only negative if anything would be the lack of combo meals. They are pretty new so maybe later they can work some onto the menu. Especially a Pork and Brisket combo. So if that’s my only complaint, great job y’all. We look forward to visiting again.
