Deep Run Roadhouse

We paid a visit to Deep Run Roadhouse in Richmond, VA before returning home from our New Year’s with family. We figured since we were there we may as well check out a new spot for the BBQ Trail. So after a little checking around we decided to go here and give them a try. Deep Run Roadhouse lays claims to serving regional bbq as well as Tex-Mex dishes. Here’s what we found.

Where is Deep Run Roadhouse Located?

Well for starters I’m not sure where in Richmond we were but the Deep Run Roadhouse we went to was located on Gayton Road. I definitely used GPS to find them. Once we arrived we saw that they are in a small strip of restaurants that all share a parking lot. They also have a second location near VCU on Laurel St.

The Restaurant and Staff:

The first thing we noticed when we entered was the décor. We loved the way it was decorated. I really liked the long horns. Everything was well kept and very clean. They had a decent size dining room and actually had a second room to the side which was closed off. Remember that this was a late lunch / early dinner on New Year’s Day. I thought we were lucky to find them open. That said, they weren’t very busy when we were there. We went to the counter to check out their menu and someone came from the back to wait on us. She was very friendly and extremely helpful with the menu. Both young ladies we talked to had a very good knowledge of the menu and were very friendly. There were a few other customers in the dining room. The girls kept tabs on all of us to make sure everything was ok with our meals. At the end of our visit I talked to a young man I believe to be maybe a manager but I’m not sure. It was a real pleasure talking to him and introducing myself to him.

Our Choices at Deep Run Roadhouse:

3 Meat Platter with Jalapeno Mac & Cheese and Cowboy Beans.

Now we come to our meal choices at Deep Run Roadhouse. I ordered a 3 Meat Platter with Pulled Pork, Smoked Sausage, and Sliced Brisket. My sides were Jalapeno Mac & Cheese and Cowboy Beans. The pork was good but just a little bit salty for me. Tammy said hers was not salty. I’m not sure how they were different. It did have a nice smoke ring and good smoke flavor. The smoked sausage was pretty good. It had kind of a sweet and smoky flavor. And the brisket was exceptional, having great smoke and seasoning and being moist and tender. Nice package. When we got our food I noticed that they also had slipped a few burnt ends on my plate for good measure. Thanks y’all. My jalapeno mac & cheese was very good. They serve a nice creamy / cheesy mac with jalapenos chopped and mixed in. Not too hot if you’re concerned but a little kick. The cowboy beans rounded my meal off just right. They’re prepared ranch style with small pieces of burnt ends and maybe a little chili powder in it too. Yes, I was loving them.

2 Meat Platter with Mac & Cheese and Texas Caviar.

Tammy ordered a 2 Meat Platter with Pulled Pork and Burnt Ends. Her sides were regular Mac & Cheese and Texas Caviar. In addition to the pork already mentioned she had some wonderful burnt ends. Theirs are cubed chunks of brisket with lots of smoke and seasoning. They had a great flavor. Her mac & cheese was like mine minus the jalapenos. She liked hers better. The Texas caviar was very good too. This is a mixture of black beans, corn, celery, sauce and whatever else they used in it. If you’ve never tried this you should.

The Sauces:

I tried out 3 of their sauces while we were there. All of them were pretty good. Here’s what I tried out. The Sweet Sauce is a standard sweet tomato based sauce. It’s a good all-around sauce for people that prefer sauce on their bbq. This would be similar to a Kansas City Sweet Sauce. The Sweet and Spicy. This is a tomato based sauce with a little spice but not too hot. It reminded me of a mild Western NC Sauce. Finally I tried what they called their NC Sauce. I’d put it closer to a South Carolina sauce. It is a mix of mustard, vinegar, and spice.

I enjoyed using the NC Sauce with my sausage. I also used the Sweet and Spicy on the last half of my pork. It blended with my pork very well.

And Desserts:

Deep Run Roadhouse,
Key Lime Pie and Peanut Butter Pie.

We had to try out their desserts. Tammy ordered a piece of Key Lime Pie. I do not eat Key Lime but she said it was wonderful. I chose the Peanut Butter

Pie. Have mercy it was good. I’d save room for that one again.

Final Thoughts:

Well I think that Deep Run Roadhouse is a very good stop on our BBQ Trail. The people were wonderful as was the food. The restaurant was comfortable and clean. I don’t think I could ask for much more. Funny thing was that while talking to some of the employees I was told that the owner used to own a different bbq restaurant in Richmond. When I told them that one didn’t fair too well with us they said he sold it about four years earlier. Oh good, he wasn’t the owner when we went there. The current owners at that restaurant have really messed up the recipes. No I’m not going to name that one. You’ll have to look through the places I’ve been in Richmond and find them. So the only comparison at Deep Run Roadhouse would be the names of some of the sides. There’s not much to compare after that. Deep Run Roadhouse gets my vote no doubt in my mind.
