City Barbeque; Garner, NC

January 18, 2016

A friend of ours came home from Garner, NC and told us about City Barbeque. He was really excited about them and told us just how good they were. Well, considering how highly he spoke of them we had to plan a road trip. Oh, the other perk…They are next door to Cabela’s. So how could I go wrong?

Where Is City Barbeque?

City Barbeque is located in a row of buildings made up of eating establishments. The one we went to is in Garner, NC as I said next to the Cabela’s there. Their address is 110 Cabela Drive. They are not too far off of I-40. I’d use GPS or a map search for the exact directions. I really don’t want to get anyone lost.

City Barbeque is also located in several other states. I recommend checking out their website. Take a few minutes to watch the “Our Story” video. It will explain a lot about their business.

What We Ate at City Barbeque:

City BBQ, Deluxe City Sampler.

City BBQ, Deluxe City Sampler.

We ordered the Deluxe City Sampler. It is enough for two people to share. This sampler had Pulled Pork, Sliced Brisket, Ribs, and ¼ Chicken. We also ordered a single Smoked Sausage to go with it so we could try everything. The Sampler comes with your choice of two sides. We chose the fresh cut fries and baked beans with brisket. Tammy also wanted to try the corn pudding, which is not my thing, so we ordered that too. City Barbeque smokes all their meats at their location. Everything was fresh.

Well I started on the chicken. It was good even though I’m not big on that at a bbq place. The chicken wasn’t the highlight of my meal. It was really messy. Once I made it through that I went for the ribs. They looked great and didn’t disappoint me. Yet again another mess. I was ready for a hose down when I finished them. They really had a good flavor with the rub, smoke, and sauce. After the ribs and several paper towels later I was ready to get into some pulled pork and brisket. I’d been tasting them with my eyes the whole time.

So I’ll kind of combine the pork and brisket since a lot of my description would be repeating itself. Both had a really nice smoke ring along with the smoke flavor and their dry rub. They were awesome. I was so into this meal that I didn’t even check out their sauces other than their hot sauce. I tried a little of it and it didn’t seem too hot to me. It was pretty good.

Our fries and baked beans were wonderful also. Tammy loved her corn pudding.

City BBQ, Triple Chocolate Cake and Peach Cobbler.

We topped this off with dessert. These were made from scratch Triple Chocolate Cake and Peach Cobbler. I loved my cobbler. It reminded me of my grandmother’s. Tammy said the chocolate cake was really good too. Either of them probably could have been shared after the meals we ate.

As if all of this weren’t enough, we were given a sample of Smoked Turkey. The turkey was better than the chicken. Very moist and juicy. Even though again, I’m not looking for anything that once had feathers at a bbq joint.

So my final take on City Barbeque. I’d go for the pulled pork and brisket for a two meat combo next time. Tammy says she’d prefer the pork and turkey.

The Restaurant and Staff:

City BBQ, Smoker.

City BBQ, Smoker.

The City Barbeque restaurant is pretty good sized. They also have tables outside if you want to enjoy eating outdoors. Everything was really clean and well kept. You order at one end of a counter and pick up your order at the other end. We were still getting drinks when ours came up and they actually brought it to our table. Everyone there was exceptionally nice. After our meal I talked to the manager, “T”, and he gave us a behind the scenes tour. It was great. We were able to check out the smokers and watch as an employee prepared brisket to go into the smoker for the next day’s lunch crowd. We really enjoyed ourselves and couldn’t have asked for a nicer host. Thanks to all involved.
