Buz and Ned’s Real BarBeCue, Richmond, VA

Eating at Buz and Ned’s Real BarBeCue is worth the drive to Richmond. Oh yeah, they are good. We’ve been here several times and never been disappointed.

Where Is Buz and Ned’s?

Buz and Ned’s has two locations in Richmond. We go to the one located at8205 W. Broad St. It’s not too far off of I-64 in Richmond. Unless you’re familiar with the area I’d say just use your GPS or a map for some good directions. Needless to say I’m not the one to offer such directions. I let my smart phone, or my brother-in-law, take me there. For the sake of this review I’m sticking with this one location.

Buz and Ned’s is located in an old building in Richmond but I’m not sure what it used to be. They have it fixed up really nice though. When you walk in you get in line to order from a counter. Everyone from the people that take your order, the cooks and out on the floor waitresses and waiters are very

friendly. They have always been very friendly to us. The dining room is very large and open. It has a huge ceiling fan in the main room. It keeps the air circulating. Once you order you can get your drinks and pick your table. Someone will pick up your ticket and bring the food to you. They will then check on you, refill drinks, etc.

What We Ate at Buz and Ned’s:

Wow, this could take a while. I think I’ll just stick with my last visit.

I ordered a large combination meal. I picked the Pulled Pork and Brisket for my meats with Fried Okra and Baked Beans. I also got a cup of Brunswick

Chicken, Brisket, and Pulled Pork Sliders.

Stew to go with it. To top it all off I ordered a half rack of Baby Back Ribs. Actually the ribs were to go. My plan was to have them the next day.

Tammy ordered the (3) Sliders. There was one each of Pulled Pork, Brisket, and Pulled Chicken. She just went with chips for her side.

Starting with her sliders, the brisket and pork will be discussed with my order. The chicken you may ask. Well I don’t have a clue. It must have been good because she never offered me a taste and she always lets me try hers if it’s different from what I have. At least until now. Oh well, I’m not a chicken guy anyway.

Ok, now for my feast. The pulled pork was great. It’s actually somewhat pulled and then chopped. You’d have to watch them to see what I’m talking about. I had some smaller pulled portions and some larger chopped chunks. All was well smoked with a nice smoke ring and some bark along the edges. I tried a couple of bites with their sauce. It’s a really good tomato and vinegar base sauce. After I tried it I continued eating the pork without sauce. The brisket was just as good. Moist, juicy and very tender. It too had great flavor. I tried the sauce with it too but continued on without it. My fried okra was very good also. I really like their baked beans. They are just full of flavor. Of everything I had the Brunswick Stew was probably my least favorite. It was good but not great in my opinion. One strong flavor stood out with it that I couldn’t pin down. Tammy finally tasted it and said that it had a lot of sage giving that strong taste. Beats me.

And by the way my baby back ribs were awesome too. They are smoked and then put on a grill before serving. They brush a sauce on them lightly which caramelizes and just adds to the wow factor. These babies are killer. They need no more sauce added to them.

My Thoughts:

If you go anywhere near Richmond, VA and you love bbq, you have to give them a try. My wife’s brother lives in that area and loves to send us pics just to let us know that he was at Buz and Ned’s and we were not. Yes he can be cruel at times but he’s still my brother. What can I say?

I live about a half-mile away. It’s one of my go-to “I don’t want to cook tonight” places. The staff is wonderful. Even on a crowded night, service is quick and the staff efficient and pleasant. The whole place is always clean, from entryway to kitchen to dining area to restrooms.
Every single item on the menu is delicious; they even make hot dogs taste special. Try the catfish. I love love love the catfish, with hush puppies and fried okra.
The beer assortment is truly amazing, and you ALMOST can’t go wrong. My suggestion — don’t order the Cheap-Ass Beer until you have reached the point that you can’t taste the good stuff any more. It’s awful, but I think that’s part of it’s cachet.

Carolyn, thanks for the tips. If we lived a half mile away I don’t know if we’d ever cook again. Someone else suggested the catfish. I’ve never tried it. Living 1 – 1/2 hours away we don’t get there too often. So when we do I go for the baby back ribs or a pulled pork and brisket combo. Maybe some day I’ll get to try it. Thanks for your input.

The building was a Fuddruckers that closed Late 90s Early 2000. I personally am not a big fan of them personally. I find it’s pretty standard nothing that stands out. My favorite local owned bbq is Jackson Smoke house at 2ed and Lee. It was built on what was historical smokehouses before Richmond was burned. The owner is very talkative and nice!
